High School Roundup: May 8, 2012

Taking a look at what the news outlets are reporting on high school lacrosse in the state.

Dexter 13, Canton 6.

Jake Waldrup and Cameron Rooks scored five and three goals, respectively, to lead Dexter. Teammates Andy McDonagh and Ian Weisenberg each added two goals and had two assists.

Lapeer West 7, Davison 6. Lapeer West’s three-goal fourth quarter ultimately earned them the win.

Saginaw Heritage 16, Bay City Central 3. Dominic Scola and Matthew Harrison had three apiece for Heritage.

Ann Arbor Huron 15, Temperance Bedford 0.

Chelsea 20, Romulus 4. Five goals and three assists for Chelsea’s Colt DeVries. Nice day.

Walled Lake Central 13, Walled Lake Northern 10. Central rallied from a 5-3 halftime deficit to score 10 in the second half.

Portage Northern 14, Holland 6. Four multi-goal scorers for Portage Northern.

Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 11, Flint Powers 7.

“They pressured us like every other team had pressured us on defense,” Flint Powers Catholic coach Chuck Vierk said. “They outhustled us on ground balls, and that’s a huge factor in who wins the game. They got a lot of second opportunities, and that ended up killing us over the long haul.”

Holland Christian 7, Northview 6. Zach Wiersma scored five for Holland Christian.

Portage Central 10, Vicksburg 2.

“For a second-year varsity squad to play an even second half against arguably the best squad in southwest Michigan is a moral victory for us,” Vicksburg coach Dan Mills said.

Eh, “their backups aren’t that much better than us!” doesn’t strike me as super-encouraging. Vicksburg will continue improving as the program ages, though.

East Grand Rapids 13, Forest Hills Eastern/Northern 3. Unexpected domination by an EGR team that looks like it’s rounding into form.

Grand Haven 11, Caledonia 4. Matt Burns had an eight-point day for Grand Haven.

Rockford 21, Holland West Ottawa 2.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central 12, Zeeland 7. High-scoring day for GRCC, led by a six-goal output from Matt Pfenning.

Grand Rapids Christian 12, Spring Lake 8. Coach Andy Sharp’s team takes down that of his brother, Doug.

Clarkston 11, Farmington 0. Wolves goalie Adam Gohl (side note: this is a great name for a goalie) stopped seven shots to preserve the shutout.

Mattawan 14, Portage Northern 0. Portage Northern was riddled with injuries. NO EXCUSES, coach.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 18, Ann Arbor Skyline 5.

Dexter 21, Ypsilanti Lincoln 1. Odds that Dexter’s starters played the entire game? I’m going with 95%.

Ann Arbor Greenhills 17, Romulus 4.

Tecumseh 20, Ypsilanti 6. Matt Scheffler and Shane Lewandowski both scored five for Tecumseh, and Scheffler added three assists.

Lapeer West 8, Bay City Western 0. Junior Trevor Krehel had a goal and four assists.

Detroit Catholic Central 6, Utica Eisenhower 5.

With the sky growing darker and darker, Catholic Central had to come back from two one-goal deficits to outlast the previously unbeaten Utica Eisenhower for a 6-5 win, escaping before lighting [sic] started to paint the sky.

Drama. Second article.

Caledonia 15, Spring Lake 8. Jonathan Mirque scored five goals to lead Caledonia.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central 15, Lowell 6. GRCC turned on the jets in the second half after leading by only one at the break.

Holland Christian 11, Grand Rapids Christian 9.

Chelsea 7, Ypsilanti Lincoln 6 (OT). Truman Hadley notched the game-winner.

Howell 9, Walled Lake Central 8.

Dexter 14, Tecumseh 3.

Jake Waldrup led Dexter with nine points. He scored seven goals and assisted on two.

For a program that very obviously has a system when a new guy can step up each year and take the reins, I just find it so bizarre they don’t give the younger guys a chance in blowouts to build some depth. At the end of the day, I guess they’re happier killing younger programs, and getting the same treatment from those who are more established.

Ann Arbor Skyline 3, Ann Arbor Huron 2 (OT). Skyline scored with less than a second left in regulation to force overtime. Intensity.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 17, Temperance Bedford 0.

Michael Jones and Jeff Duart-Digon split time in net for Ann Arbor Pioneer. Jones made two saves and Duart-Digon made one save.

For those keeping score at home, that means Bedford only got off three shots on goal all game.

Midland 12, Rochester Adams 9.

Ryan Sweeney led Midland/Midland Dow with five goals and one assist, and Alex Zahn had five assists. Teammate Connor Baak scored four goals, led with six ground balls, and made 12 saves in goal.

There are three possibilities here: 1) this paragraph is wrong 2) Midland had a guy play in goal for part of the game and in the field for another part 3) GOALIE GOALS.

Holland West Ottawa 16, Holland Christian 7. Adam Olson had five goals for West Ottawa.

Flint Powers 6, East Lansing 3. 17 saves for Powers goalie Brock Owen.

Clarkston 12, Rochester Adams 10. Travis Craft scored six goals for Clarkston.

Midland 15, Rochester Hills Stoney Creek 11. This one was a 6-6 tie at the half, but Midland pulled away with seven third-quarter goals.

Bay City Western 12, Bay City Central 3.

Dexter 11, Madison Heights Bishop Foley 10 (OT).

Cam Rooks then netted the game-winning goal off an alley pass by Jake Waldrup in overtime to clinch the victory for Dexter.

Michael Spuller led Dexter (14-0) with four goals and one assist. Rooks added two goals.

Ann Arbor Greenhills 11, Chelsea 2.

Walled Lake Central 16, Waterford United 2. Ben Gjokaj won 12 of 15 faceoffs for Walled Lake Central.

Ypsilanti Lincoln 12, Monroe St. Mary-Catholic Central 4. Ray Pressly had six goals and a helper for the Railsplitters.

Brighton 18, Howell 4.

Grand Rapids Christian 5, Lowell 4.

Lapeer West 10, Davison 7. Six Goals and two assists for Lapeer West’s Trevor Krehel.

Holt 14, Haslett-Williamston 2. Stevie McKee had six goals and two assists… in the first half.

This roundup has like 700 different games in it (a number here meaning “three”), so you’ll have to click through to see what they were.

Girls: Rochester 17, Farmington North-Harrison 6 and Farmington 13, Oxford 5.

Girls: Hartland 17, Ann Arbor Huron 14.

Girls: Bloomfield Hills 20, Lake Orion 9. Margaret Metzger had six goals and an assist, while teammate Maria D’Angelo added five scores and a helper.

This post is really long. Now that college seasons are winding down, I’ll have High School Roundups a bit more frequently to cut down on individual length.

Michigan Improvement ’13: Depth

Michigan was not a good intercollegiate lacrosse unit in 2012: this will not come as a surprise to you. However, looking to the future, there are reasons for optimism. One reason? depth. The Wolverines didn’t have as many players capable of contributing at the Division-1 level as you’d like.

Game Mich. Players Used Opp. Players Used Diff.
Detroit 21 30 -9
Penn State 24 31 -7
Denver 28 42 -12
Air Force 19 40 -21
Jacksonville 22 24 -2
Mercer 33 28 +5
Loyola 19 32 -13
Bellarmine 23 22 +1
Mount St. Mary’s 23 30 -7
Harvard 19 28 -9
Delaware 21 27 -6
Ohio State 19 23 -4
Rutgers 21 22 -1
North Carolina 21 43 -22
Avg. -7.64 Total -107

The Wolverines simply didn’t have the depth to keep up with opponents this year. That’s especially borne out by the middle-quarter lulls they experienced this season:

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 OT
Michigan 2.08 2.00 1.85 2.23 0.00
Opponents 2.85 3.15 3.77 2.77 1.00

Obviously the defense had bigger dropoffs than the offense, and that can speak to a few things:

  • Poor faceoff performance. Playing more defense means tired defensive players.
  • Penalty differential. Man-down defense is more taxing on individual players than even-strength. The Wolverines allowed seven more man-up opportunities than they received.
  • Fewer players. Michigan’s defense played fewer guys over the course of the year than the offense did. That’s on account of injuries in part (Vince Strittmatter missed the entire year due to injury, for example), and in part because of a lack of bodies in general.

Going forward, the depth will improve. Remember, only two or three guys on the current roster committed to Michigan knowing they’d play at the highest level, and now every player who commits to John Paul and crew will be aware of the opportunity in front of them. That will help lure higher-caliber players.

Only eight players exhausted their eligibility this spring. Stephen Levitt, Jordan Bargas, and Brent Kirshner all played extremely limited roles. In fact, Bargas didn’t play at all after knee injuries cost him the final year of his career. The 2012 recruiting class currently consists of 18 players (and probably more by the time the 2013 season rolls around, including some transfers), and that depth will be much better.

It’s possible, even likely, that more players will leave the roster without exhausting their eligibility, but the overall depth picture consisting of players who are capable of competing at this level has nowhere to go but up.

Michigan 5, North Carolina 19

Although Michigan’s Team One improved greatly over the course of their season, it wasn’t enough against a high-octane North Carolina team on Saturday. The Tar Heels exploited the differences in top-end talent and depth to run the Wolverines off the field in Chapel Hill.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

North Carolina 2012
Michigan North Carolina
Faceoff Wins 10 Faceoff Wins 17
Clearing 15-19 Clearing 22-24
Possessions 31 Possessions 45
Goals 5 Goals 19
Offensive Efficiency .161 Offensive Efficiency .422

Carolina started things right by dominating the possession game. As expected, they won their fair share of faceoffs, and they cleared the ball very well, while holding Michigan to mediocre-ish clearing numbers.

What they did with those possessions is just as important. Whereas Michigan struggled to put the ball in the net at all, the Tar Heels finished 42% of the time. Adjusted for the strengths of the respective teams (hint: Carolina is a lot better), it was one of Michigan’s worst defensive performances of the year.

Don’t take my word for it, look at the in-depth tempo-free stuff from TempoFreeLax:

Notes

Yeah, so, this one was coming from a mile away. As much as Michigan improved over the course of the year, it only showed a little bit in their overall tempo-free numbers (they finished third-from-last, ahead of only Wagner and Mercer), and it definitely didn’t get them into the realm of North Carolina, and NCAA Tournament team that finished No. 15 to the tempo-free calculations.

The only multi-point Wolverine was Trevor Yealy, who ends his only season as a member of Michigan’s NCAA team as the all-time leader in scoring. All told, he has 26 goals and one assist in his career as a varsity player. Thomas Paras and Will Meter (among others) will certainly pass him before next season ends, but it’s a well-deserved honor for Yealy.

Speaking of Paras, he had a rough day: no scoring on seven shots, only two of them on the cage. He and Yealy (six shots, three on goal) were the only Wolverines to launch multiple shots in the game. Meter and Willie Steenland picked up an assist apiece.

On faceoffs, you can’t expect a poor unit (finished the year at 41%) to outdo one of the nation’s best (ending the regular season at just under 60%), and Brian Greiner’s 10/27 effort was admirable enough. He also picked up a goal on a clean win, giving him four scores in his final four games at Michigan.

Defensively, Mack Gembis’s caused turnover and three ground balls paced the squad. J.D. Johnson had a CT of his own, to go along with two ground balls.

In net, Emil Weiss continued getting pummeled, but also continued saving at least his fair share of opponents’ shots. He allowed 15 goals and made 14 saves. He briefly left the game with a thumb injury, and Dylan Westerhold allowed four goals with one save in his stead.

Marcus Holman had an OK day for Carolina, scoring six goals and adding four assists. Most of the other individuals were held mostly in check, but it was also a pretty balanced scoring day for UNC, and 16 Tar Heels found their way into the scoring column in one way or another.

BoxscoreMichigan Recap. North Carolina Recap. Since the game was on ESPN3, you can re-watch the whole thing here if you so desire.

Up Next

Team One is no more, and it’s on to Team Two for the Wolverines. Obviously, the season was a struggle – to say the least – but there were occasional flashes of competence, and there are signs that the future won’t be quite so dim.

I’ll be talking about all of that, starting with the Requiem for a Season post sometime late this week or early next week. You can see that post for Michigan’s final club season here.

Detroit 10, Canisius 12

The UDM season started off as well as can be expected, but midway through the year, things took a turn for the worse. That slide was ultimately permanent, and it came to an end – along with UDM’s season – on Friday.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Canisius – MAAC Tournament 2012
Canisius Detroit
Faceoff Wins 12 Faceoff Wins 13
Clearing 16-18 Clearing 13-16
Possessions 33 Possessions 31
Goals 12 Goals 10
Offensive Efficiency .364 Offensive Efficiency .323

One of the quiet storylines over the second half of the season was Detroit – despite their struggles in winning games – actually rounding into a solid faceoff team. They’ll have to do it over the course of a season for it to be meaningful, but that unit should no longer be a liability, especially if they can pull it off against pretty good faceoff teams with limited depth.

Speaking of that depth, I mentioned in the preview that I thought the Titans would fade in the second half thanks to depth issues (brought about by tons of injuries), and that came to fruition. At halftime, Canisius had two goals on 17 possessions (.118 efficiency), but Detroit’s lack of bodies on D caught up with them after the break, and they faltered, allowing 10 goals on 16 possessions, simply a brutal .625 efficiency mark.

At the end of the day, the game lived up to expectations, and Detroit just didn’t have quite enough left in the tankto finish the deed.

Notes

Detroit’s downward spiral over the back half of the season came to its conclusion with this upset. Despite playing some of the worse teams on the schedule over the final month-plus, UDM could only muster a 1-goal win over Jacksonville. That’s due to a combination of many factors – primarily injuries – but it’s disappointing nonetheless.

It was a very balanced offensive day for the Titans, and by far their most efficient since the mid-year swoon started. Ten different UDM players made the scoresheet, with eight different goal-scorers. Scott Harris (two goals on three shots), Alex Maini (two goals on seven shots and an assist), Brandon Beauregard (a goal on two shots and an assist), and Scott Harris (a goal on three shots and two assists) were your multi-point performers.

Not a super-efficient day shooting the ball for UDM, despite the pretty good offensive efficiency number (backing up missed shots and getting offensive GBs can do that for you). In addition to Maini’s shot total mentioned above, Shayne Adams scored a single goal on eight shots, and only put two of them on the cage. Maini managed to take home All-Tournament honors.

Defensively, your star performers were either completely out (Jamie Hebden) or limited due to injury (Jordan Houtby). SSDMs Joe MacLean and Tom Sible -among others – were also out due to injury, so it’s easy to see why the defensive performance was weak, especially once the depth got tested. Jon Bemben led the way with two caused turnovers and five GBs.

A.J. Levell made 14 saves while allowing 12 goals, a pretty strong performance backstopping a depleted defense. He was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team, the capper on an excellent junior season.

As mentioned above, faceoffs improved over the back half of the season, and Friday’s game was no exception. Tyler Corcoran won 10 of 15 draws, a banged-up Brandon Davenport won three of nine, and Nick Garippa lost his only draw. At the beginning of the swoon, UDM was winning just 39% of faceoffs, and they finished the year at nearly 43%. Although ending the year on backslide doesn’t feel great, some elements definitely improved during the stretch.

Of course, Joel Matthews didn’t play, and it seems that one can be chalked up to injury, like with many of the Titans who missed the contest. Concussions are serious business, so hopefully he’ll be able to continue his lacrosse career in the future. Otherwise, somebody will have to step up offensively for UDM.

Canisius actually went on to upset Siena in the Tournament final, earning the MAAC’s bid to the Big Dance.

Up Next

The season is over for Detroit, and though it looked like a sure bet to be the best in school history in late March, it ended in disappoinnment. The slide included embarrassing losses to (what should have been) overmatched opponents, a seven-goal rout, and giving up a four-goal lead with just a few minutes to play.

It’s easy to see where this team can get better in the offseason, and you can be certain I’ll analyze just that – along with plenty of other breakdowns – over the summer and fall. Up first, coming later this week (or more likely, early next week) will be the “Requiem for a Season.” You can see last year’s edition here.
