The Next Level: May 15, 2012

Our weekly look at Michigan natives’ performances in Division-1 lacrosse. Andrew Cote and Johns Hopkins eliminated Graham Adams’s Stony Brook squad, and Bryan Walker’s Yale was knocked off by Notre Dame. That leaves Cote as the last Michigan native standing.

Johns Hopkins 19, Stony Brook 9

  • Senior defensman Andrew Cote (Brother Rice) – Did not see game action.

Stony Brook 9, Johns Hopkins 19

  • Senior attack Graham Adams (Brother Rice) – Played, but did not accrue any statistics.

Yale 7, Notre Dame 13

  • Junior midfielder Bryan Walker (Brother Rice) – Did not see game action.

As always, corrections, additions, etc. can go in the comments or the e-mail inbox.

Lax Links: May 14, 2012

Rounding up the latest links from around the web. Some of these are a little old, but them’s the ropes.

Michigan

A.P. Photo of Tyler Frederick getting mugged by an unnamed Wolverine.

The New York Times talks shot clock in college lacrosse, and the cover photo features Michigan.

Despite a trying season, Michigan coach John Paul is anxious to carry on with the program-building in Ann Arbor. His season-wrapup podcast with the WTKA morning show has some interesting facts – including some freshmen that J.P. expects to contribute.

Coach Paul is not used to ending his season this early:

Been 14 yrs since I’ve been done with lacrosse this early. Will get a lot accomplished this month but would much rather be competing.

Motivational video? Motivational video:

It goes without saying that Michigan would have much preferred to win that game, but at least they got a nice video out of it.

Detroit

Two Titans of each gender were named to all-MAAC tournament teams. Photos from the Titans’ loss to Canisius.

This is old news and there’s a good chance I’ve already written about it, but here are your Detroit honorees from the MAAC banquet:

  • 2nd Team Attack – Shayne Adams
  • 2nd Team Defense – Jamie Hebden
  • LSM of the year – Jordan Houtby

15 Titans were also selected to the All-Academic team. Video of coach Matt Holtz from the banquet:

Adrian

Adrian barely missed out on advancing in the D-3 NCAA Tournament, courtesy of a second-overtime goal from Denison.

MCLA

Davenport recap of their CCLA Tournament loss to Dayton.

Davenport has a web portal up for their MCLA Tournament run. Eight Davenport players earned all-CCLA honors. They’re prepared for the MCLA tournament, further evidenced by their 19-12 first-round win this afternoon.

Photos from GVSU’s CCLA Championship win over Dayton.

2012 photos from the Western Michigan season.

High School

Lacrosse Magazine has its Midwest regional report. Brother Rice was No. 2 behind Dublin Jerome heading into the weekend, and since the Warriors had to participate in the CHSL championships instead of heading down the the MSLCA tournament, we may never know who’s top dog in the region. Brother Rice is up to No. 38 in the latest ESPNHS Fab50.

Mike Costello breaks down the Division-1 bracket in the Ann Arbor Observer. The Division-2 bracket gets the same treatment.

The Oakland Press covers the rise of Lake Orion lacrosse under coach Brad Thomas.

Bizarre story out of Genesee County. Did Swartz Creek coach Mike Lakies interrupt a game to punch an opposing player? I’m assuming if the allegations prove correct, Swartz Creek will be seeking a new coach.

Detroit Catholic Central got “Team of the Week” treatment on MLive, and apparently this is just a distinction that means they get a column about them. Said column:

“We’re very fortunate to get great players every year,” Catholic Central coach Dave Wilson said. “This year, the talent is good, but we’re not as deep. Yet, what they lack, they make it up in chemistry.”

In fact, there are prime examples of teamwork, sharing and support up and down the lineup. Senior captain Nick Gingell is off to a strong start with 14 goals but also has registered 14 assists from the midfielder postion.

I guess it also comes with video coverage.

Brother Rice’s charity event with Hamburg (N.Y.) raised… $784. Clarkston’s even Friday evening raised over $15,000. The Michigan Difference.

Ionia is looking for lacrosse coaches.

Don’t forget that the North American Lacrosse Invitational takes place this weekend at Brother Rice.

Recruiting

Four Clarkston players signed with colleges during the spring signing period, including three to Albion and UDM commit Nick DeMattia.

The North Coast Times talks about California players having to leave the area to pursue Division-1 lacrosse. Michigan-bound Brendan Gaughan is quoted in the article, and of course it’s interesting on its own merits.

How much do you know about Michigan signee Brad Lott? Do you know what his favorite reality TV show is? Consider your life enriched.

Michigan signee Paxton Moore helped his team to an Inter-Ac championship. They’re up to No. 2 in the country, according to MaxPreps.

A bit of internal linkage for the return of the Hello post.

Etc.

Warrior earned the uniform rights for Liverpool FC, and although there’s some controversy over altering the club’s crest, that’s a huge deal for a company that primarily focuses in lacrosse and hockey. Also seeing a British article explaine what Warrior does is kind of funny.

Top Shelf Lacrosse, run by Cranbrook (and Johns Hopkins) alum Val Washington and his brother Chris (who played collegiately at Washington and Lee) is helping grow the game in Genesee County.

Warrior is hosting a tent event this Thursday-Sunday in Warren. Deals galore, a handful of NHL players in attendance, and much more, so check it out.

I’ve mostly dropped the ball on MCLA coverage this year. HOWEVER, the national tournament starts today in both Division-1 and Division-2. All first round games are streaming on MCLA.US. Hit up that site for streams. The first game of note (Grand Valley against Washington University) starts at 10 a.m., so get that bad boy fired up.

Hello: Chase Brown

The season is over, and it’s time to profile the remainder of the 2012 Michigan lacrosse recruiting class. I’ll cover the final three guys in alphabetical order, starting with Severn (Md.) LSM Chase Brown. On to the profilin’:

Severn Admirals Michigan Wolverines Lacrosse Chase Brown

He's the player getting tackled. This is the only picture I could find. via The Gazette.

Relevant Articles

Information is light on the ground for this kid: There is nothing about him on Inside Lacrosse (at least from a recruiting perspective), and not a word on ESPNHS. Fortunately for you, dear reader, I can work the Google:

Brown was a big part of a strong Severn defense. That was the Admirals’ calling card this year.

The Admirals’ defense — Blake Wood, Chase Brown, Devlin Nelligan, Bobby DeStefano, Chris Kienhe and Manis — limited the Saints to just four fourth-quarter shots.

Bizarrely, early season articles describe the defense as being very strong, then Inside Lacrosse called it a “work of progress.” He was a team captain this season, and a full-field threat who notches assists from time-to-time. You can see his full-season (offensive) stats courtesy of the Washington Post. I make no promises as to how comprehensive they are. Another recent game report, and Brown’s defense played a role in Severn upsetting Boys’ Latin.

His club team is the Anne Arundel All-Stars.

Yay he’s an honor roll student. He’s also a football player, and although he’s listed as a returning running back, his highlights (the final four minutes of the video below) are exclusively at wideout.

Based on my own inexpert review of his highlight film, a few things jump out: Unlike, say, Brother Rice D commit Chris Walker, he’s not an elite takeaway defender. Sure, the film shows a number of strips, but a lot of those are from trail checks that won’t be available in college. What he does do is play great positional defense. I’m not sure if there’s a lacrosse version of the football phrase “he runs receivers’ routes for them” as it relates to cornerbacks, but Brown does just that. He keeps his feet moving quickly, and stays in front of dodgers.

The film doesn’t show a lot of excellent GB play – though it does show the desire which can be half the battle sometimes. He’s also a big, tough guy. Sometimes I question the listed sizes, but in the football portion of his highlight film, he’s the tallest guy on the field, and has a thick build for a wide receiver (not that the football competition in Annapolis provate schools is among the best, but still). He has good size, and college S&C can help turn him into an intimidator, especially with the attitude he displays.

Other Interest

Without a commitment post from any trusted sources, no word on any other interest.

Teammates of Note

The 2012 class at Severn is a pretty strong one: Brown is one of three recruits bound for a Division-1 college, joined by UMBC commit Mark Cohen and future Maryland Terrapin Nick Manis, both midfielders. Three more players are headed to D-3, including attack Kyle Moran and Brown’s fellow defensive players Blake Wood and Bobby DeStefano.

In the 2011 class, no players out of Severn went to Division-1 programs, but four players went on to Division-3. Longpole Conor Colgan and midfielder Nate Babcock headed to St Mary’s (Md.). Attackmen Pat Lamon and Sebastian Auth were freshmen at Drew this spring.

Going back to Brown’s freshman year (when he was likely a JV player), three offensive players and a goalie went D-1, and a faceoff specialist headed to a D-3 institution. In 2010, a defenseman and an attackman signed Division-1 letters of intent, while two offensive players and a D/LSM went D-3.

Video

The Upshot

In case you didn’t notice (the only excuse for which is that you weren’t paying attention), Michigan’s defense was not good this season. An upgrade in talent is necessary, and Brown is one of a few players in the class who can do just that.

He also has skills that are complementary to some of Michigan’s other defensive signees. As alluded to above, Chris Walker has great takeaway checks and an excellent stick for a close defenseman (albeit against weaker competition in Michigan than Brown faces in Maryland). Brown’s technical skill and quickness as positional defender work well with that.

The video doesn’t show a whole lot of Brown running the field, and what it does show seems to demonstrate more quickness than top-end speed. That would initially lead me to believe he’ll be a close defenseman rather than an LSM in college, but Michigan lists him as the latter, so what do I know.

North American Lacrosse Invitational brings together Midwest’s best

The Hill Academy North American Lacrosse Invitational 2011 Champions

The Hill Academy North American Lacrosse Invitational 2011 Champions

Lacrosse fans in the Midwest are familiar with the MSLCA Championship – pitting some of the region’s best teams against each other this weekend in Worthington, Ohio – but a similar event will also take place the following week right here in Michigan. The second annual North American Lacrosse Invitational takes place May 19 and 20 at Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

“We kind of follow the model of the Midwest Tournament,” said organizer Hugh Mahler. “This is part of the same idea. You’re bringing in teams that compete on approximately the same level. You want to have that competition, but it’s creating the awareness of the various programs that are in the midwest.”

Participating teams
Brother Rice (#1 Michigan, #2 Midwest)
Loyola Academy (#1 Illinois, #3 Midwest)
Culver Academy (#1 Indiana, #4 Midwest)
Western Reserve Academy (#16 Ohio, #22 Midwest)
Detroit Country Day (#5 Michigan, #51 Midwest)
New Trier (#9 Illinois, #63 Midwest)
The Hill Academy (#1 Canada)
Bishop Timon St. Jude (#3 Western New York, #108 East)

Bringing exposure to the Midwest is an important part of the mission of the invitational. Although players from the Midwest – including those from Michigan – often go on to college opportunities to play lacrosse, they don’t have the same visibility to college recruiters that East Coast high schoolers do.

Helping Midwest-based players continue their lacrosse careers is not the primary goal of the NALI, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. College coaches from in-state programs, as well as such Division-1 institutions as Hobart, Air Force, and nascent Marquette will be in attendance. So will lower-division coaches, and those from club programs.

“They’re looking out at sophomore and junior years now,” said Mahler. “There’s one kid from Rice that’s already committed who’s a junior [Notre Dame-bound Sergio Perkovic]. As the number of schools are putting in programs that makes it much more competitive for the coaches to find the talent.”

Pooling some of the best talent in the region at one competition allows for easier travel for college coaches – and ultimately many more opportunities for players in the Midwest.

Of course, college attention is nice – and can be life-changing for some players. For the rest, simply getting the national recognition that they believe their high schools deserve can be a big deal.

“The whole intent is being recognized not only on a regional basis, but also on a national basis,” Mahler said. “It’s great for schools that are attending to be recognized for the excellence. I think bringing these kind of schools together gives the kids who are playing a real taste of what it takes to be a better player, and more competitive.

“Because the sports is in many respects still evolving, it’s a great way to bring the higher level of competition to an event where they’re competing.”

The tournament starts at 2:30 Saturday, May 19 at Brother Rice High School. Youth and underclassman game will take place prior to the opening faceoff of the main event.

In last year’s event, The Hill Academy defeated Culver to take home the Red Division, while Brother Rice capture the Blue Division with a victory over Bishop Timon St. Jude.
