NALI is nigh

Brackets for the North American Lacrosse Invitational have been available for a few days. You want to see them, you say? Well, OK.

Blue (In other words “A”) Division:

North American Lacrosse Invitational Brother Rice Culver Academy Hill Academy Loyola Academy

North American Lacrosse Invitational Bracket

And for those who would like to know a little bit about the lower (they say “red”) division:

Detroit Country Day Bishop Timon St. Jude Western Reserve Academy New Trier

North American Lacrosse Invitational Bracket

For a full breakdown on what the NALI is all about, see my post from late last week. It has a title that literally every single newspaper has ripped off. So much for Search Engine Optimization and such thingies, I guess.

Back-to-back top tens

Making the Sportcenter Top Ten on ESPN’s flagship show is a badge of pride. Even the well-paid professional athletes get a kick out of appearing in the rundown of the best plays of the day.

Lacrosse makes occasional appearances on the program’s list – Syracuse’s Tim Desko has had a variety of between-the-legs goals show up this year – but that’s historically been restricted to the world of NCAA ball. Never before had a play in an MCLA club game made it onto the network’s airwaves.

Now, on back-to-back days, MCLA teams from Michigan graced the hallwed ground of the Sportscenter top ten.

First up, Michigan State’s Mac Ensley with an over-the-shoulder goal in the Spartans’ MCLA quarterfinal loss to 1-seed Cal Poly:

If you’re interested, you can see it in its Sportcenter context here.

Not to be outdone, Grand Valley goalie (and Forest Hills Central alum) Danny Kransberger decided that his only chance at making it onto the airwaves was with the ever-rare GOALIE GOAL:

Congrats to both guys (and both programs) on getting exposure on sports’ biggest outlet.

Requiem for a Season: Detroit Titans 2012

Fresh off their best season in program history, the Detroit Titans entered 2012 looking to take the next step. Simply making it to the MAAC Championship game was good for last year, this year, the goal was to win it.

Halfway through the year, they seemed poised to put together their best season yet. However, injuries, coaching malfeasance, and plain bad luck mounted. They finished the season with an absolute whimper, falling in five of their final six games, including three to teams that were not as good over the course of the season.

Let’s take a quick look at the Titans’ statistical profile:

Detroit Titans 2012
Detroit Opponents
Faceoff Wins 152 Faceoff Wins 203
Clearing 251-323 Clearing 254-317
Possessions 538 Possessions 592
Goals 141 Goals 164
Offensive Efficiency .262 Offensive Efficiency .277

We’ll take that one step further and look at the advanced tempo-free stats, adjusted for strength of opponents, courtesy of TempoFreeLax.com:

All told, this season was a serious step back for UDM. The record was slightly better (on account of playing one game fewer), but the product on the field was worse:

  • Despite adding Joel Matthews for most of the year, the offensive efficiency dropped from 46th to 52nd nationally.
  • Defense dropped even worse, going from 19th-best in the country to 35th.
  • Overall, the Titans were the 43rd-best team last year. This year, they dropped to 50th.

That’s not the next logical step for a team that challenged for a conference title and hardly lost any key personnel from the previous year. However, it’s not all bad.

What Went Well

Despite the big drop in defensive efficiency, the D actually wasn’t so bad. Middle-of-the-pack is just for a team like Detroit. Once again, UDM led the nation in caused turnovers per game (though playing the second-fastest lacrosse in the country maximized possessions for those CTs to add up), and goalkeeper A.J. Levell was a rock in cage, earning All-MAAC second-team honors.

The Detroit ride was also very good, holding opponents to the seventh-worst clearing percentage in the country. Part of that could be competition faced – that number is not adjusted for schedule strength – but part of it carries over from the aggressive style of lacrosse the Titans play.

Other aspects of the squad worked well in fits and starts – the offense and defense both had moments of glory, and even the faceoffs went well at times – but the key going forward will be to develop more consistency.

Room for Improvement

With a 6-9 record and a lot of disappointment in the rearview mirror, this section will probably be very long.

Offensive efficiency was very poor. It was slightly better with Joel Matthews in the lineup, but it took a pretty serious tumble from 2011. It’s no surprise to see indications that Bill Tully’s tenure as offensive coordinator will be mercifully ended after one year.

Faceoffs continue to be a sore point for the Titans, who were among the nation’s bottom ten teams on draws. It certainly felt like they got better over the course of the season, but that’s an in-depth analysis for another day.

Clearing was very poor. Some of that is plain bad luck, of course (injuries to defensive midfielders and others certainly didn’t help), but you’d like to see the team get better on stick skill-oriented aspects of the game as the program matures. Technically, they did improve – going from second-worst last season to fifth-worst this year.

As mentioned above, injuries are mostly bad luck. It did seem that Detroit was more struck by the injury bug than normal in 2012, and hopefully eight months of rehab will be enough for the team to return for a healthy 2013 – and one that’s not as unlucky.

The Distant Future

I won’t delve too much into specifics here (what else will I have to talk about in the offseason?) but it seems to me that, despite a step back in 2012, it’s easy to see a trajectory where the Titans bounce back in 2013. Of course, it’s also entirely possible that the program’s momentum has been slowed – particularly with the way the second-half collapse unfolded – and it takes an extra couple years to reach the level they were expecting to be in the near future.

Either way, 2012 shouldn’t be written off as a throwaway season. It contained plenty of lessons for players and coaches alike, and the key to learning from failure is embracing it and taking those lessons to heart.

Some key players depart, but as a program that’s still building from the ground up – the departing seniors were the first four-year class in its history – the opportunity to mature elsewhere on the roster and add some fresh talent through recruiting and development means the trajectory is still in the right direction.

Lax Links: May 16, 2012

It’s only been a couple days since the last lax links post, but with the high school regular season winding down and the MCLA Playoffs in mid-stride, there’s a lot going on.

High School

This is not a link. It is a photo:

Holt Rams Troy Athens RedHawks lacrosse

Holt beat Troy Athens 10-5 in a sloppy game.

I haven’t had the chance to take in as many high school games as I did last year, but I managed to make it out to Holt last night to see the Rams take down Troy Athens 10-5. It was a sloppily played game – complete with four illegal stick penalties – but a good one nonetheless. I got the distinct impression that Holt is more than five goals better than Troy Athens. Both teams got pretty good goalie play, and about 8 of the 15 scores were uncontested one-on-ones with the keepers.

The Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association named its all-league teams. Players of note:

  • 1st Attack: Ian King, Cincinnati St. Xavier (Michigan commit)
  • 1st Midfield: Sergio Perkovic, Brother Rice
  • 1st Defense: Mike Wroblewski, UD-Jesuit
  • 1st Goalie: Ahmed Iftikhar, Detroit Country Day
  • 2nd Attack: Riley Kennedy, Brother Rice (Michigan signee)
  • 2nd Midfield: Connor Maks, UD-Jesuit
  • 2nd Defense: Chris Walker, Brother Rice (Michigan signee)
  • 2nd LSM: Sam Resk, Detroit Country Day

Every school got a handful of honorable mentions, so it’s not worth listing them all.

Brother Rice is up to No. 35 in the ESPNHS Fab 50 rankings. Culver Academy (Ind.) who will participate in this weekend’s North American Lacrosse Invitational at Brother Rice, is No. 42.

MHSAA Playoffs start this afternoon, and the NALI is (of course) this weekend.

MCLA

Davenport took down Concordia (Calif.) in the first round of the MCLA Tournament, and dispatched 3-seed Westminster in Round 2. Highlights from the first two rounds.

In the semifinal round tomorrow, the Panthers will take on cross-town rival Grand Valley State. Video preview:

Very big deal for the MCLA D-2 teams in the state (obviously), and a re-match of last year’s semifinal. The game will webcast live on MCLA.us.

Photos from Grand Valley’s first-round win over Washington University. Highlights from their round 2 victory over Grand Canyon.

Michigan State was (barely) edged by 1-seed Cal Poly last night, and you can see highlights on TheRUSH.com. I would strongly recommend checking out this play.

If my math is correct, the Spartans’ loss means Davenport and GVSU are the last two collegiate teams from Michigan still in action.

Recruiting

Four Clarkston seniors had their signing day ceremony today:

Clarkston Wolves lacrosse Nick Demattia Ethan Frick, Travis Craft Kevin O'Grady

Clarkston's Nick Demattia, Ethan Frick, Travis Craft, coach Brian Kaminskas, and Kevin O'Grady

Flow central. DeMattia is headed to UDM, while his teammates are all bound for Albion.

The 2012 Under Armour All-American rosters are set. Although no players from Michigan made the cut, Carlsbad (Calif.) La Costa Canyon attack Brendan Gaughan, who has signed with Michigan, will play for the boys’ South team.

Players will experience a weekend of events that begins on Thursday, June 28 and culminates with the Under Armour All-America Girls Classic on Saturday, June 30 at 5PM followed by the Boys Classic at 8PM. The Boys Classic will be showcased live on ESPNU for the seventh year.

Set your DVRs, like, really far in advance.

The UDM women signed four more future Titans.

As always, if you have something you’d like to bring to my attention, hit the inbox at t.w.sullivan1@gmail.com or on twitter @GreatLaxState.

High School Roundup: May 15, 2012

Walled Lake Central 15, Hartland 8.

Stingy defense by Walled Lake Central kept a very good Hartland team in check the whole game. Once again, faceoff play by Ben Gjokaj played a big part in the victory as he dominated the draws.

Winning faceoffs is an excellent way to win lacrosse games. It’s science.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 6, Sylvania Southview (Ohio) 3. Jeff Duart-Digon had ten saves for Pioneer.

Dexter 21, Ypsilanti 6. It’s definitely necessary for Mike Spuller to get nine goals and five assists. Certainly no circumstance to play some depth guys.

Ann Arbor Skyline 20, Temperance Bedford 3. Skyline led 7-1 after one quarter and 13-2 after two.

Portage Central 5, Battle Creek Pennfield 4 (OT). Drama:

Portage Central trailed for most of regulation, but came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter and force overtime.

In overtime, Aaron Kosobucki netted the game-winning goal from a fast break assist from Matt Schuen.

Nice win for Portage Central.

Flint Powers 16, Davison 3. A 12-goal outburst during the second and third periods really tied the room together.

Lapeer West 8, Bay City Central 0. Shutout city.

Grand Haven 11, Grand Rapids Christian 9. Three goals apiece for Grand Haven’s Trevor MacNamara and Cole Curtiss.

Ann Arbor Greenhills 12, Belleville 8. John Lazarsfeld had five goals for Greenhills.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 14, Troy Athens 2.

Forest Hills Eastern/Northern 13, Rockford 12. This was the conclusion of a game a couple weeks ago that was suspended due to lightning.

Grand Blanc 8, Davison 4. Grand Blanc had a 7-1 lead in the third before the score was cleaned up a little bit.

Dexter 19, Chelsea 8. Josh Galbreath had 16 saves for Chelsea, so that means 35 shots on goal for Dexter. Dreadnaught goalies made four total saves, which means 12 shots on goal for Chelsea.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 8, Ann Arbor Huron 2.

“This is probably the strongest Pioneer team I’ve seen. We had a great victory over (Detroit) Catholic Central (No. 6 in the rankings), who is a great program,” [Pioneer coach James] Corey said. “I think they’re hungry, because I don’t know that we’re in the top programs yet.

Undefeated Pioneer isn’t exactly blowing people out (Huron has been pretty awful this year), but they’ve gotten the job done all 15 times they’ve hit the field to stay undefeated.

Midland Dow 14, Bloomfield Hills United 7.

Walled Lake Central 12, Lapeer West 9.

Two brother Rice wins. Your notebook-style update doesn’t work out very well when it’s obvious that you’ve published in between two of the games.

Clarkston 16, Lake Orion 2. Clarkston has won the OAA Red, and smacked the OAA White-leading Dragons.

Holt 13, Okemos 4. Holt won the CAAC and posted photo evidence on the Twitter machine.

Forest Hills Eastern/Northern 15, Mattawan 4. Bobby Pelton had six goals and six assists for FHE/N in a Dexter-like performance.

Saline 21, Chelsea 4.

Saline’s Colin Cederna and Tom Hickey each scored four times and added four assists to lead the team. Teammate Nick Karapas added four goals.

Strong day for Saline.

Oxford 10, Swartz Creek 9. The winning goal came with just 11 seconds left on the clock.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central 14, Grand Rapids Christian 13.

Grand Rapids Christian went into the fourth quarter of the third place game in the OK D2 Tournament, down by six points.

Despite a furious comeback behind five goals apiece from Ryan Betts and DJ VanderBaan, the Eagles fell one point short.

That’s a hell of a comeback, even if it wasn’t completed. Also, they’re called “goals” not “points.”

Zeeland 12, Caledonia 11.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 11, Dexter 5. What? You mean Dexter’s top attackman didn’t have 11 goals and eight assists?

Tecumseh 10, Ann Arbor Skyline 5.
