NCAA Championship Breakdown

This is outside the typical range of content featured on these pages, but Tempo Free Lax has to be put to good use somehow, right? A quick look at both teams in this afternoon’s NCAA Final:

That would be Loyola, whom I’ve been rooting for to pass UMass in the overall rating (it looks like it’s not going to happen, no matter how many excellent teams the Hounds beat in the tournament, such is life.

And that would be the unseeded finalist – for the second year in a row – Maryland.

Notes

This should not be a particularly fast game. Maryland is famed for their deliberate, slow pace offensively, and a solid defense that has helped them win a game 9-6 this year (and also lose a 5-6 decision, among other low-scoring losses). On the other side of the ball, Loyola is closer to the middle of the pack as the No. 22 fastest team. For a team that scores as much as they do, though, they certainly don’t run up tons of possessions.

Despite an often-sluggish pace of play, you don’t need to necessarily expect a low-scoring game in this one, however. Maryland only scored in the single-digits four times this year out of 17 games. Loyola has had the same number of single-digit games, with 18 chances. That’s because both offenses are efficient, with Loyola’s No. 10 in the country, and Maryland’s oft-criticized unit No. 3 nationally (of course, it’s criticized for being Stall City, not for being inefficient).

HOWEVA, both teams also sport excellent defenses – No. 7 nationally for Maryland and No. 5 for Loyola – so the offenses are going to be pretty deliberate in their execution. Both are teams that shoot accurately and value their shots (only one stalls on damn near every possession to do it, of course), and against a pair of good defenses, that will mean cycling it around a lot before finding the defense out of shape.

Both of these teams are right near the middle of the pack in faceoff win percentage. Loyola is slightly better at No. 24 – despite being victims of a near-perfect performance for Notre Dame’s Liam O’Connor on Saturday – whereas Maryland comes in No. 30. With their sample sizes, it’s likely that strength of opposition and simple statistical noise account for most of the difference.

One thing that will likely slow down the game? The clear-ride transition. Both teams are excellent clearing the ball – Maryland is No. 9 and Loyola is the best team in the country – and not nearly as proficient at riding the opposition into turnovers. Maryland’s ride is ranked No. 39 in the country, and Loyola’s is still pretty high at No. 20, but against good clearing teams, they probably aren’t going to push their luck in that department. Don’t expect lots of fireworks at midfield leading to transition opportunities.

The Big Deal

This should be a very even game. According to the respective expected win percentages, Loyola has a 54.74% chance of taking home the victory. That’s damn near a toss-up, with the nation’s second-best team (despite bowing out in the tournament’s first round, UMass probably won’t be unseated from the top of the heap) having only a slight edge on No. 7.

The possession game probably won’t be a huge factor. Both squads are good-not-great on faceoffs, excellent on the clear, and mediocre on the ride. That means up-and-down action should be limited, but equal in terms of opportunities.

The difference, then, will be the team that can better take advantage of the opportunities that they do have. Loyola’s No. 10 offense against Maryland’s No. 7 defense is slightly less of a heavyweight battle than Maryland’s No. 3 offense against Loyola’s No. 5 defense. Whichever D can come out slightly better will earn the championship.

In that matchup, even though the Loyola offense isn’t quite as prolific (and we’re talkin’ less than two goals per 100 possessions difference here), I like the one that brings star power. Mike Sawyer and Eric Lusby and Davis Butts… the list of impressive offensive performers for Loyola is pretty impressive, and while Maryland isn’t exactly trotting out scrubs this afternoon, nobody stands out like those three do for the Hounds.

On D, where Loyola is slightly better, they also have more takeaway specialists (this isn’t something we tracked on Tempo Free Lax this past season, but going forward we should probably look at caused turnovers per defensive possession), led by Scott Ratliff. Loyola also has the better goaltender, with Jack Runkel saving a greater percentage of shots faced than oft-fawned-over Terp Niko Amato. While that doesn’t necessarily speak to a better defense, Loyola stockpiling all the offensive and defensive stars certainly says something. Of course, Maryland has had less star power in pretty much every game of the tournament so far, and that hasn’t bothered them a lick.

There are intangible factors at play for each side – you never know how motivational factors like breaking an ignominious streak, or bringing home the school’s first NCAA Championship will play out –

Overall, Maryland gets a bad rap for playing slow, and while that is the case, they still manage to score a lot – No. 15 nationally on a non-tempo-free basis. In this game, both teams will probably play it close, and I just see Loyola having the better players. At the end of the day, that makes a difference. Loyola takes home the 9-7 victory and the school’s first national championship.

Over/under for Quint Kessenich bitching about college lacrosse needing a shot clock: 8.5. (This is a post for another day, but I’m of the opinion that a shot clock would do much more harm than good).

MCLA

The club season has come to an end, closing the book on the college lacrosse game in Michigan.

Davenport’s season ended with a semi-final loss to Grand Valley. Jac Coyne talks Grand Valley’s defeat of Davenport in the semis.

The MCLA Division-1 All-Tournament team includes Michigan State’s Spencer Martin.

The MCLA is rolling out on-demand service of their tournament games. Grand Valley v. St. Thomas is the only Michigan-relevant game to date, but there are plans to add more.

The Division-2 All-Tournament team is littered with players from Michigan colleges:

  • GVSU Attack Jack Dumsa
  • Davenport attack Jordan Richtsmeier
  • GVSU midfielder Conor Schwalm
  • Davenport defender Mackenzie Ganzcak
  • GVSU Goalie Danny Kransberger
  • GVSU faceoff specialist Ian O’Brien

All-American lists are also out in their full glory, featuring several of the same players.

The Detroit Free Press drops a mention of Michigan State’s Sportscenter appearance. No love for Grand Valley’s Goalie Goal.

High School

Detroit Country Day is rounding into form just in time for the state playoffs to begin.

“No one will feel sorry for us, and neither do we,” [Country Day Coach Byron Collins] says. “We are looking forward to the state tournament but we will approach each day as a day to get better as a program.”

The article also give the Yellow Jackets props for winning the MSLCA B Bracket. DCD won the B-bracket third-place game at this weekends North American Lacrosse Invitational.

West Michigan All-Star takes a look at the high school playoff brackets and where West Michigan teams stack up in them.

Catholic League results. Shocker of the century: Brother Rice took home the A Division on the Boys’ side. Madison Heights Bishop Foley won the B Division title. On the girls’ side, Bloomfield Hills Marian and Livonia Ladywood are your Division 1 and 2 champs, respectively.

The MHSAA Tournament has started, and that means it’s time for Brother Rice to shine:

“Entering this season, I thought we had the potential (to defend the state title), but the kids really need to work and get to the next level,” Ambrose said.

“And the stars have to align a little. I think on a good day we can play with anyone. We have to play at a high level every day, and the kids are beginning to realize that.”

Talk about sandbagging. Rice hasn’t lost to a Michigan-based team in 765 years. A Detroit Free Press feature on Brother Rice’s quest for eight straight MHSAA titles.

North American Lacrosse Invitational coverage.

Clarkston’s Travis Craft was the MI Prep Zone boys athlete of the week.

A couple high school roundup-type posts that I don’t want to hold until after the weekend:

East Grand Rapids 16, Lapeer West 2.

“Our Pioneers played pretty well tonight,” said EGR coach Cedric Soubry. “It was our first state tournament game and we came to play. We are still having some issues on both sides of the ball; however, our hard work is paying dividends. We seem to improve after each game.”

EGR had some rough moments earlier this season, but they’re clearly peaking at the right time.

Holland Christian 15, Grand Rapids Christian 9. It was a 5-4 nailbiter at halftime, but Holland Christian increased their lead to a comfortable margin after the break.

Birmingham Seaholm 16, Saline 7. The entire story consists of a restating of the score, so no details for you.

Recruiting

I’ll be the first to admit I know nothing about Canadian Junior A lacrosse, but incoming Michigan freshman Kyle Jackson put up four goals in a recent game, so… nice.

Detroit’s recruiting class grows by five:

  • Clarkston D Nick DeMattia (mentioned on GLS last week).
  • Atlantic Beach (N.Y.) Lawrence D Chris Donahue.
  • Northville Midfielder Nick Mellucci
  • Dexter midfielder Michael Spuller, who has scored 785 million goals for the Dreadnaughts this year
  • Detroit Catholic Central D Jordan Yono.

That brings them to 16 signees, assuming none slipped past me since the fall announcement.

Davenport’s recruiting class grows with the additions of Flint Powers seniors Brock Owen and Ryan Dziadzio.

Etc.

St. John’s defenseman Harrison Freid, formerly of the Michigan club team, will play in the USILA North-South All-Star game.

brief lacrosse mention in a story about facility upgrades at the University of Michigan:

Brandon said the master plan also calls for building a lacrosse facility. Michigan added men’s lacrosse this year, and the women begin play in 2014.

I’ve heard the plan (or at least pipe dream) is for indoor and outdoor practice/competition facilities. Time will tell what actually gets built.

Internal Linkage:

As always, thanks for stopping by. Contact information is at the top of the post if you’d like to bring my attention to a story.

High School Roundup: May 24, 2012

Walled Lake Western 15, Oxford 6. Walled Lake Western had a 10-2 halftime lead and cruised to the easy win.

Flint Powers 19, Bay City Central 1. Dominic Hamper had a Dexter-like performance with five goals and eight assists for Powers.

Chelsea 16, Romulus 4. Nick Rosol had a hat trick and two assists for Chelsea.

Tecumseh 7, Ann Arbor Greenhills 6. Goalie Tyler Hooper made 14 saves for Tecumseh.

Lapeer West 11, Saginaw Heritage 5. Trevor Krehel starred for Lapeer West.

South Lyon 5, Ann Arbor Skyline 4.

Grand Rapids Christian 12, Portage Northern 5. A stout D from Christian held Portage Northern off the scoreboard in each of the first and third quarters.

Lapeer West 7, Bay City Western 2.

“Our defense kept Bay City Western scoreless during the first half,” Lapeer West coach Bill Krehel said. “We allowed only five shots on goal during the second half.”

Killer quote.

DeWitt 16, Swartz Creek 2. Mark Tratt had four goals and five assists.

Tecumseh 20, Temperance Bedford 3.

Tecumseh’s Shane Lewandowski had six goals and one assist, and Austin Slick-Linn and Stephan Bloxam added four goals and an assist apiece as Tecumseh advanced to the second round of the Division 2 state tournament.

Prolific offensive day.

Battle Creek Pennfield 8, Northview 7 (2OT). Tate Ferris had two goals and three assists for Northview. Not impressed yet? He’s typically the team’s starting goalie…

Chelsea 9, Ypsilanti 7.

“It was a well played game by both teams,” Chelsea coach Joe Koengeter said. “We battled back and dug down deep. Especially in that second half. [Goalie Josh Galbreath] really played well by making a couple big saves near the end of the game.”

fhj

Clarkston 12, Midland/Dow 6.

Ann Arbor Skyline 3, Plymouth 1. Jordan Hickman made 18 saves for Skyline. In a game that featured a grand total of 14 goals. Just throwin’ that out there.

Holland West Ottawa 17, Kalamazoo United 1. West Ottawa rushed out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way.

Zeeland East 17, Grand Rapids South Christian 7. Bryce Gruppen had five goals for whichever of the Dux/Chix this team is.

Chelsea 5, Temperance Bedford 3.

“We came out flat and just didn’t have a very good game,” Chelsea coach Joe Koengeter said.

Ah, but you earned the win, and that’s what counts.

Brother Rice 8, Culver Academy (Ind.) 11. I’ve been meaning to post a full recap of the NALI (in addition to just the photos). We’ll see when I get around to it.

Troy 14, L’Anse Creuse 7.

The Colts overcame a 1-0 deficit in the opening two minutes with a resounding 14-7 victory over L’Anse Creuse in a Division 1 boys lacrosse pre-regional.

Oh my, how ever did they come back from such an enormous deficit?

Midland 11, Lake Orion 7. Alex Zahn had three goals and an assist for Midland.

Forest Hills Central 19, Lowell 2.

“We played well,” said FHC coach Tony Quinn. “Lowell has a lot of good athletes, and we were able to have a lot of guys contribute. You learn a lot from every game, and we will look at the tape and learn from this one. We need to work on our ground balls, so that’s what we will look at.”

Etc.

Rockford 15, Hartland 3. Eight combined saves for two Rockford goalies (including UDM-bound Connor Flynn).

Ann Arbor Pioneer 17, Macomb L’Anse Creuse North 2. Detroit-bound midfielder Dylan Swanson scored five goals for Pioneer.

Battle Creek Pennfield 7, Portage Central 5. It was a game of runs. Pennfield built a 3-0 lead, Portage Central battled back for a 4-3 halftime lead, but couldn’t hold on for the win.

Warren De La Salle 17, Chelsea 4.
