MHSAA Semifinal Brackets

There are only 16 teams left standing in the MHSAA’s 2012 season, four in each division. The semifinal round of the playoffs takes place tomorrow night, and let’s take a quick look at the matchups.

MHSAA Boys Lacrosse Bracket Division 1

MHSAA Boys Lacrosse Bracket Division 1

Brother Rice v. Seaholm will take place 20 miles away from both schools (which are a mile away from each other, go figure) at Detroit Catholic Central. Holt v. Pioneer takes place in Howell. Both games are at 6 p.m.

MHSAA Boys Lacrosse Bracket Division 1

MHSAA Boys Lacrosse Bracket Division 2

Country Day v. Cranbrook (again, just a couple miles apart) goes down at Grosse Pointe South, 30 miles from either school. Notre Dame Prep v. Forest Hills Central takes place at East Lansing High School. Both games, again, start at 6 p.m.

The situation is a little different for the girls, whose Divisions both play at the same site (a much better idea, if you ask me).

MHSAA Girls Lacrosse Bracket Division 1

MHSAA Girls Lacrosse Bracket Division 1

The Division-1 semifinals take place at South Lyon High School, with the Seaholm/Rockford game facing off at 5, and Hartland/Pioneer following at 7 p.m.

MHSAA Girls Lacrosse Bracket Division 2

MHSAA Girls Lacrosse Bracket Division 2

The Division-2 semifinals take place at Okemos High School. Cranbrook-Kinswood v. East Grand Rapids starts at 5, and Okemos v. Lady follows at 7 p.m.

All four finals will take place Saturday, with the boys playing at Birmingham Seaholm, and the girls in Rockford.

High School Roundup: May 31, 2012

With a one-day lull in the MHSAA playoffs (only one game this afternoon), it’s a good time to catch up on the past week or so of action.

Rockford 15, Hartland 3. This one is kind of old, but the link goes to a shiny-lookin’ photo gallery, so check it out.

Dexter 17, Tecumseh 10. Michael Spuller had six goals and three assists for Dexter. No complaining though, because this one was actually a semi-competitive game.

NALI Recap. From the source.

West Michigan regional semifinal pregame notes. Those are the games that took place over the last couple days. Michigan Prep Zone also breaks down the regional semis.

Warren De La Salle 16, Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 5. Also included: Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 15, Dexter 4. Michael Spuller failed to reach double-digit points. In fact, it appears Spuller failed to score at all.

East Grand Rapids 10, Okemos 8. East Grand Rapids had a sketchy start to the year, but they’ve really rounded into form in the home stretch.

Rockford 15, South Lyon 5. Mitch Newton had three goals and an assist, while Kento Nakano had a goal and four assists for the Rams.

Ann Arbor Pioneer 11, Troy 2. I was at this game. Pioneer was never really threatened by the Colts, as the final score indicates. Pioneer got a lead in the first quarter, and stalled juuuust about every time down the field after that.

Brother Rice 23, Midland 6.

Connor Baak scored four goals and had one assist for Midland, while Alex Zahn had one goal and one assist. Matt Holtz had one goal while Tanner Diment added one assist.

For an article written from the perspective of the team that got slaughtered, I guess it could be worse. For some reason, The Oakland Press also goes with the Midland perspective, though we get much more detail.

Mattawan 16, Battle Creek Pennfield 6. According to the article “no other details were available.” Excellent on-site reporting.

Clarkston 12, Brighton 9. This sounds like it was a super-exciting back-and-forth game (that looks sarcastic, but I’m serious). See it for yourself with the highlights.

Holt 14, Forest Hills Eastern/Northern 8. Division 1 seems to be on a Brother Rice/Holt collision course.

Requiem for a Season: Michigan Wolverines 2012

Michigan Wolverines Lacrosse

Michigan Wolverines Lacrosse

Goals were modest coming into Michigan’s first year as a varsity program. Although the Wolverines had won three of the past four MCLA National Championships, the overall level of excellence in 2011 (and even 2010) wasn’t quite to the 2008-09 standard, and Michigan lost tons of talent going into the debut of Team One.

Combine all that with the simple difference in competition level between MCLA and Division-1, and you’re not expecting to light the world on fire your first go-round. However, three to four wins was a modest and attainable goal for this Michigan team, and they fell well short of it, emerging with a single victory over fellow adolescent program Mercer.

Let’s take a quick look at the Wolverines’ statistical profile:

Michigan Wolverines 2012
Michigan Opponents
Faceoff Wins 141 Faceoff Wins 199
Clearing 199-271 Clearing 189-239
Possessions 462 Possessions 510
Goals 111 Goals 183
Offensive Efficiency .240 Offensive Efficiency .359

We’ll take that one step further and look at the advanced tempo-free stats, adjusted for strength of opponents, courtesy of TempoFreeLax.com:

So, yeah. This wasn’t a good team. Possession game, offense, defense – hardly anything was excellent, and there’s a lot of room for improvement.

What Went Well

There is exactly one thing that the Wolverines were good at in 2012: The ride. Despite being mostly outmanned on a man-for-man basis, Michigan rode opponents into just a 79.08% success rate on their clears, good for second-best(!) in the country, behind the decidedly more talented unit from Johns Hopkins.

It’s clear that Michigan’s 10-man (though they didn’t run it on every ride, it was a big part of their gameplan) will be successful at the D-1 level. Especially with a couple years of recruiting varsity-caliber athletes, they’ll be a good riding team. Of course, they gave up a couple long-range goals on account of the 10-man, but it was probably worth it in the end, and those goals will become less frequent with more experience and athletic talent.

OK, there’s actually another thing that Michigan was pretty good at this year: playing a clean game. They committed only .075 penalties per defensive possession, and as the defensive talent improves, that number should stay constant or even decrease slightly.

Although Emil Weiss’ numbers weren’t excellent, the save percentage he put up (.519) with a pretty bad defense in front of him was a sign that the goalie situation will be in good hands whether he wins the position or is beat out by a better player going forward.

Room for Improvement

Oh hey, this section is going to be really long.

First things first: Faceoffs, they were bad. At times (particularly against Loyola), Michigan didn’t even bother trying to win faceoffs off the draw, preferring to scrum for the ball and at the very least preventing immediate transition opportunities for the opposition.

The biggest achilles’ heel for Michigan may have been the clearing game. While the ride was second-best in the country, the clear was second-worst. That’s the area in which Michigan’s lack of Division-1 stick skills and athleticism was most obvious. A sub-.500(!) day against Penn State, a day barely over that mark against Mount St. Mary’s, and a variety of other horrible clearing days exposed Michigan’s biggest deficiency transitioning to the Division-1 level.

The defensive efficiency and offensive efficiency were actually equal amongst the Division-1 cohort (No. 55 nationally), but for my money, the defense was worse than the offense. There are reasons for this: Michigan’s starting LSM from the previous year (Matt Asperheim) graduated, a starting longpole (Harry Freid) suited up for his fifth year at St. John’s, both goalies graduated, etc. The talent simply wasn’t up to par. Part of that was injury-related, and part will be rectified only through recruiting. Although the defensive coaching staff was the same, led by DC Ken Broschart, the scheme became much more advanced, and that was a tough adjustment for some players, as well.

Offensively, Michigan’s lack of stick skills was at times a bugaboo – midfielder Willie Steenland committed 37 turnovers, and otherwise-excellent attack Will Meter chipped in 23 of his own – and boosting D-1 talent will help prevent opposing defenses from pressing out to cause turnovers, and also reduce the number of uncaused turnovers committed. With another year in the offensive system, and a better group of talent, Michigan’s propensity to force things (particularly feeds to the crease) should also be toned down, and the ability to patiently wait for good looks should ramp up.

Michigan in general didn’t do a good job of controlling the pace this year. As an outmanned team, it’s no surprise that their intention was to slow down the game, and keep it close with the opportunity to steal a game or two in the fourth quarter. That didn’t happen, and they ended up playing the 16th-fastest lacrosse in the country. Reducing their own turnovers, in particular, would have been a huge boost to that effort.

The Distant Future

I will have 765 posts this offseason (that number is approximate) breaking down areas in which Michigan’s team can be expected to improve – or things they won’t get much better at – so I’m not going to belabor this point much.

As Michigan adds Division-1 talent, the results on the field will get better, and potentially do so very quickly. While the outgoing senior class did an outstanding job laying a foundation for the future, aside from a few select players (particularly Trevor Yealy), they did not possess D-1 talent. The incoming freshman class sacrifices experience and a known quantity in the leadership department for better skill.

Whether that skill translates immediately into wins is the big question. The schedule isn’t going to be much easier – if it is at all – and in certain areas, simply being more competitive is a better goal.

The Next Level: All-GLS Team 2012

The inaugural team consisting of the best performers in Division-1 who hailed from the state of Michigan. Any disagreements, perceived omissions, etc., feel free to debate them in the comments.

Goalie

Cy Abdelnour
Ann Arbor Pioneer
Junior/Michigan

Abdelnour’s stat line may not seem worthy of inclusion on an all-anything list: only two games played, 9:27 of total action between the pipes, one save and three goals against for a save percentage of .250. However, he has the distinct honor of being the only goalie on a Division-1 roster from the state of Michigan this season, and thus earns the first-team nod.

Defense

Jamie Hebden
Brother Rice
Junior/Detroit Mercy

Hebden was a leader of a decent (though not up to recent standards) defense. Best of all, he did it for part of the season on a broken leg. For the season, he played in 14 games for the Titans, starting all of them. He caused 21 turnovers and picked up 38 ground balls. He also committed seven turnovers and eight penalties for 7:00.

Michael Hamilton
Brother Rice
Junior/Hofstra

Hamilton played in 13 games, for an above-average Hofstra defense, starting four of them. He caused six turnovers and picked up 21 ground balls, but committed eight turnovers and one penalty for 1:00. Making the transition from midfield to long-pole, he exceeded the expectations of many observers.

Brendan Rooney
University of Detroit Jesuit
Senior/Mount St. Mary’s

Although he Mount St. Mary’s defense was bad (we’re talkin’ quite a bit worse than Michigan’s), Rooney played in nearly every game, starting 12 of his 14 appearances. He caused ten turnovers and picked up 21 ground balls, and even took one shot on goal. He also committed five turnovers, but he was one of the players least to blame for The Mount’s defensive struggles.

Midfield

Scott Harris
Saline
Senior/Detroit Mercy

Harris played in all 15 UDM games, starting 14. He started the year at attack, but played mostly midfield. He scored 18 goals on 53 shots (34 on goal) and added eight assists. He also aided the defensive effort, causing two turnovers and picking up 14 ground balls. Like many UDM players, he was not particularly careful with the ball, and he committed 19 turnovers and seven penalties for 5:30.

Nick Dolik
Brother Rice
Junior/Penn State

Playing for the best team of any player appearing on this list (Penn State finished 9-6, and No. 20 in the country per the tempo-free numbers), Dolik appeared in all 15 games. He scored 18 goals on 63 shots (36 on goal) and added four assists. Caused five turnovers and picked up 15 ground balls. Committed 23 turnovers and two penalties for 1:30.

Alex Vasileff
Birmingham Seaholm
Senior/Michigan

One of the bright spots for an anemic Michigan offense, Vasileff played in all 14 games, starting four (though he was on the first offensive midfield for just about all of them). He was Michigan’s fourth-leading scorer with 15 goals on 41 shots (28 on goal) and five assists. Caused one turnover and picked up 11 ground balls. Committed ten turnovers and two penalties for 1:30.

Attack

Tommy McKee
Holt
Sophomore/Air Force

McKee started all 13 games for a 6-7 Air Force squad that finished dead center in the country in terms of efficiency. Scored 23 goals on 73 shots (41 on goal) and added seven assists. Picked up 19 ground balls. Committed 19 turnovers and five penalties for 5:30.

Will Meter
Brother Rice
Freshman/Michigan

Started all 14 games as a freshman for Michigan. He only scored five goals on 31 shots (20 on goal), but his primary value was as a feeder, adding 15 assists, particularly impressive on a team that had trouble finishing at times. He caused four turnovers and picked up 23 ground balls, but committed 23 turnovers and one penalty for 1:00.

Scott Drummond
Birmingham Seaholm
Sophomore/Detroit Mercy

Drummond played in all 15 games, starting 10. He scored 11 goals on 40 shots (25 on goal) and added eight assists. Caused one turnover and picked up nine ground balls. Committed 12 turnovers and two penalties for 1:00.

Specialists

Danny Henneghan – Faceoff Specialist
Brother Rice
Junior/Penn State

Like Dolik (and unlike basically everyone else on this list), he gets a bump for playing on a good squad. He started all 15 games as a FOGO, winning 149 of 293 faceoffs and collecting 62 ground balls. He didn’t score, but he recorded five shots (two on goal) and added three assists. Committed two turnovers and one penalty for 0:30.

Austin Swaney – Long-stick Midfield
East Grand Rapids
Senior/Michigan

Played in all 14 games, starting eight. He caused 15 turnovers and picked up 32 ground balls. Scored a goal on two shots (both on goal). Won two of five faceoffs. Committed six turnovers and five penalties for 4:30.

Nick Garippa – Short-stick Defensive Midfield
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep
Sophomore/Detroit Mercy

Played in all 15 games. Won two of 18 faceoffs, caused six turnovers, and picked up 10 ground balls. Took three shots (one on goal). Committed seven turnovers and eight penalties for 5:00.

Offensive Player of the Year

Tommy McKee
Holt
Sophomore/Air Force

Although Air Force’s offense and overall team were just OK, McKee’s 30 total points were four clear of the next closest opposition (26 from UDM’s Scott Drummond – and that was for a much worse offense). He also broke even in ground balls picked up versus turnovers committed, another feather in his cap compared to other candidates.

Defensive Player of the Year

Jamie Hebden
Brother Rice
Junior/Detroit Mercy

Hebden gets extra bonus points for playing in his final 4-5 appearances of the season on a sore leg – which turned out to be a fractured fibula. Although UDM’s defense didn’t live up to the hype, and Hebden was outdone statistically by Canadian LSM Jordan Houtby, he was still the best defensive player who was a product of Michigan.
