Lax Links: December 4, 2012

It’s been too long, no? Time to run down the links. General Division-1 expansion/realignment post coming later.

College

In the biggest news of the time period, Central Michigan will consider adding women’s lacrosse on Thursday.

Michigan’s program met with The Program a few weeks ago. The video evidence is on Youtube:

Scintillating footage of calisthenics there.

Detroit’s Joe MacLean and Tom Sible were on the UDM Ethics Bowl (apparently this is a thing) championship team.

Lawrence Tech coach Kevin Riley is battling cancer – and winning.

You can check out Calvin College’s spring schedule here, and Aquinas’s here.

Michigan’s Graham Conlan gets the official site profile treatment, as does Josh Stauffer.

Lacrosse Magazine talks about Hope’s first year as a varsity program and coach Mike Schanhals’ journey to get the Dutchmen to that level.

Fall ball highlights from Aquinas.

Detroit Women’s schedule.

Grand Valley goalie Danny Kransberger (a Forest Hills Central alum and Detroit transfer) is the Lacrosse Magazine pre-season player of the year in MCLA-2.

Recruiting

Roland Park (Md.) Country School senior Emma Guarino signed with Michigan’s women’s program.

A pair of lacrosse players from Birmingham Seaholm are headed to in-state Division-1 programs. Katherine Quigley will play for the Michigan women’s team, and Adam Susalla will play for the Detroit men.

Mattawan midfielder David Stafford signed with St. John’s, though it’s as a preferred-walkon type. Good to see guys from outside the traditional lacrosse areas (Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids) head to Division-1 schools.

St. Paul’s School for Girls (Md.) attack Amanda Sutor signed with Michigan.

Canton attackman Timothy Popp signed with Lawrence Tech‘s fledgling MCLA-2 program.

Philadelphia Strath Haven junior Lily Kovach committed to Michigan.

Northview defenseman R.J. Nickerson committed to Grand Valley, as did Forest Hills Central LSM Chris Bosscher and Holland defenseman Joey Seiler.

Notre Dame Prep’s Kyle Beauregard signed with UDM (thanks to Nick Garippa for passing along the photo).

Signing Day photos from a number of Michigan signees. Cincinnati St. Xavier attack Ian King in a group shot, Paul Dwyer Catholic (Ont.) attack Austin Shanks signed in what appears to be his living room, and Brighton FOGO Brian Archer is in a mystery location with a lot of hair.

The first signing class in the U-M women’s program’s history.

Detroit Catholic Central midfielder Alec Gilhooly committed to UDM.

High School/Club

Cranbrook sophomore Michael Langdon got some love from Inside Lacrosse for standing out at the Jake Reed Blue Chip camp. An attackman who impressed – New Canaan (Conn.) attackman Michael Kraus, who I assume is the younger brother of Michigan freshman Peter. 2014 Cranbrook attack Taylor Ghesquiere also received some ink at the FLG in 3D fall showcase.

Titanium Elite won their game at PPL Park in Philadelphia in the NXT Philly Showcase a few weeks back. The team defeated NXT by a 10-3 count. The Ohio-based club team features a host of Michigan natives: Brother Rice teammates Liam Reaume and Patrick Cosgrove, Country Day’s Jack Bergmann, and Forest Hills Northern teammates Grant Lardieri and Bobby Pelton.

Michigan names litter the all-star rosters from the Can-Am Showcase at Detroit Country Day several weeks back. 412 Lax also has some photos from the event.

The Wolverine Warrios club program is profiled.

Premier Lacrosse Group has winter training sessions available. More information is available at their website.

Grand Valley State and Davenport will face off Thursday night in a benefit game for a team member whose family lost their home to a fire.

Etc.

You don’t expect to see lacrosse – particularly from the state of Michigan – mentioned in an NFL coaching article, but here we are:

TEMPE, Ariz. — Kevin Spencer was coaching a lacrosse practice at Detroit Country Day School in 1976 when a passing car slowed down and stopped. A vaguely familiar figure stepped out.

It was Bill Belichick, then an assistant for the Detroit Lions.

The duo had competed against each other in college lacrosse — Spencer at Springfield (Mass.) College, Belichick at Wesleyan University (Middletown, Conn.) — but the memories were a little fuzzy.

“Bill was a Maryland guy (raised in Annapolis), and of course, lacrosse is huge in Maryland, but I think it shocked him to see it in Detroit, Michigan,” Spencer recalled. “We kind of looked at each other for a minute, trying to place each other, then I said, ‘You’re Belichick, right?’ He said, ‘Yeah. You’re that pain-in-the neck defenseman from Springfield, right?'”

Bill Belichick’s connection to lacrosse is well-known, but the Country Day tie is an interesting new angle (thanks to Jamal Robertson for the link).

The Midwest Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association will host its winter coaching clinic this Saturday at Great Lakes Golf and Sports complex in Auburn Hills. You can’t beat the price (free), and guest speakers include club coaches at Michigan and Michigan State, among several others.

Mike Costello covers the U.S. Lacrosse Michigan Chapter Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Catherine Ditsas, Mary Ann Meltzer, Graham Adams, Rob Ambrose, and Roger Bunton are the new inductees.

Michigan alum Trevor Yealy is in camp with the NLL’s Washington Stealth. The program’s all-time leading scorer (both MCLA and NCAA eras) works for Boeing.

Box Lacrosse is available in Jenison.

As always, drop me a line via twitter or e-mail with links, news tips, commitments, etc.

5/5/2013 Championship (held at Canisius) Buffalo, N.Y. TBA

A few repeated non-conference opponents (as expected) and a couple new ones. The toughest two conference opponents (at least from last year) are both on the road.

Whereas last year looked like a schedule that was set up for a conference championship run, this year’s looks quite a bit tougher. We’ll see if expectations are defied – in the opposite direction – this spring.

Stay tuned for a further breakdown.

Big Ten to add Maryland and Rutgers: Meaning for Michigan?

While the news isn’t officially official yet – Maryland will be announced as a member of the Big Ten at 3 p.m., but Rutgers is still on the clock – the addition of two lacrosse-playing schools to the Big Ten is obviously a huge boost for those three already-existing lacrosse programs in the league.

Though Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State don’t play in the same conference as-is (the Wolverines and Buckeyes play in the ECAC, Penn State in the CAA), this move makes it more likely that a Big Ten lacrosse conference is on the way. That could be at the expense of – what had been to date my preference – a reconfigured GWLL, or there are myriad other possibilities there.

My hunch is that we’ll eventually see a six-team Big Ten, with the rest of the Western lacrosse world joining together in a solidified conference. It’s certainly a mixed bag for the Marquette, Detroit, and Bellarmines of the world. This makes it just a little tougher to be one of the little guys out West (I don’t think Denver, which has established itself as a power in recent years, gives half a hoot about who’s in its conference) to be viable.

Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon and Lacrosse Coach John Paul

Athletic Director David Brandon and Coach John Paul

For the three Big Ten schools, and particularly new kid on the block Michigan, it’s an unmitigated positive. Sayeth head Wolverine John Paul:

“The Big Ten is the best conference in college sports. From a men’s lacrosse perspective any expansion that has the potential to improve our footprint in lacrosse and alumni hotbeds is a good thing. I’m glad Commissioner Delany is continuing to explore ways to keep the conference moving forward.”

Michigan wasn’t going to not play games in the Atlantic region, but this means a certain trip to the East Coast every single year, whether it’s for a conference game or simply a Big Ten agreement.

It will be interesting to see the ripple effects that these moves make, especially once both announcements are official.

Realignment Armageddon: Happening!

The Big Ten has announced that Maryland will be joining the conference for the 2014-15 academic year, and the popular pick for a 14th(!) school in the league is Rutgers.

While this is an unmitigated disaster for the Big Ten as a football conference, it’s a huge boost to money – which, as we’ve seen, is the one and only consideration when realignment is on the table – and, incidentally, lacrosse.

On the women’s side, adding Maryland makes for five programs in the sport – Northwestern, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and now the Terps. On the men’s side, it’s up to four (no Northwestern). Assuming Rutgers is indeed the next school to announce its acceptance into the Big Ten, that’s six women’s programs, and five for the men.

That means the women have enough teams to form an NCAA automatic bid conference, obviously a boost to lacrosse in the region should the Big Ten choose to go that route. On the men’s side, however, things are even more exciting. With five programs, the league is one short of the minimum for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The incentive for a Michigan State or Minnesota to add a program is suddenly boosted to levels that seem to make the move for at least one of them an inevitably (though perhaps not a short-term one).

While lacrosse certainly wasn’t on the minds of Big Ten athletic directors when they decided to reach for a few more bucks here and there, the benefits – both from a standpoint of individual schools having the money to add a program and a competitive incentive to do so – could mean a boost for the Midwest.

I’ve been planning for a while to write about about expansion/realignment/etc. Obviously when this news first started coming out, I hit the brakes on that to see what would shake out. I should have something on the topic in the coming days. Cliff Notes version: sayonara, Big East Lacrosse.

NXTsports hosting inaugural Can-Am Showcase this weekend in Michigan; rosters announced

From press release, this originally appeared on PhillyLacrosse.com, a content-sharing partner with Great Lax State.

The inaugural version of the NXTsports Can-Am Showcase will take place this weekend, November 10-11 at Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) in Beverly Hills, Mich. The first-ever Can-Am Showcase is shaping up to be a huge success and the biggest ever exposure lacrosse event in the Midwest.

Modeled after the Philly Showcase, the Can-Am Showcase will feature approximately 200 individual players in action on Saturday. The participating players hail from seventeen different states and from the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan.

All players will be placed on teams coached by NCAA Division 1 college coaches, and will play three games throughout the morning in front of more than 50 college coaches who have pre-registered to attend.

The Can-Am Showcase will continue with an elite team competition on Sunday, November 11, at which top club teams from the Midwestern United States and Canada will be in competition. Clubs and schools in competition on Sunday include: Culver Academy (IN), Hill Academy (ON), Evolve Elite (ON), Titanium (OH, IN, MI), Everest Academy (ON), Red Lions (IL), Michigan Elite, Black Grizzlies (MI), Raging Rhinos (MI), True Lacrosse (IL), and Heat Lacrosse (MI).

The Can-Am Showcase will take place at Detroit Country Day School’s state-of-the-art athletic complex, which includes DCDS’ stadium and full-field indoor fieldhouse, both of which are equipped with state-of-the-art field turf.

“Detroit Country Day School is proud to host the inaugural NXTsports Can-Am Showcase in our state-of-the-art facilities,” said Glen Shilling, headmaster for Detroit Country Day School. “As one of the original schools to bring lacrosse to Michigan, we have had a long tradition of promoting competitive lacrosse. We are eager to welcome participants, fans and coaches to this exciting event.”

As always, trying to round up everything that’s going on in the great state of Michigan as it relates to the sport of lacrosse. If I’ve missed anything, let me know via e-mail or Twitter.

Division-1

Chaminade Lacrosse Michigan Wolverines Matt Graham

I missed one of these a little while back: Michigan’s Class One interview with Matt Graham. Fellow freshman Mike Hernandez gets the treatment as well, followed by Peter Kraus.

Michigan’s second coaching clinic of the fall takes place tomorrow night. E-mail Michigan’s Director of Lacrosse Operations, Joe Hennessy, for more information. I’ll be there, hit me up in the comments or on Twitter if you will as well.

Don’t forget to take a look at Michigan’s spring schedule, including two games in pro sports venues. Michigan’s coach John Paul notes that connections to U-M alums – The Miami Dolphins are owned by Michigan grad Stephen M. Ross and the Mets are owned by Fred Wilpon, another former Wolverine – helped facilitate those high-profile games for the second-year program.

Now, just waiting on UDM to release the Titans’ full 2013 schedule.

Recruiting

Inside Lacrosse reports that Worthington (Ohio) Kilbourne 2014 goalie Michael Turnbull has committed to Detroit:

A starter the past two years at Dublin Scioto (Oh.), Turnbull also participates in wrestling and football at Kilbourne. A member of Resolute, he attended MVP, Tri-State and the Long Island Classic. Turnbull strongly considered Dartmouth, Navy and Ohio State.

Recruiting information is easier to come by for Michigan as a “name” program (regardless of program success to date), so it’s nice to see UDM get some love from IL.

According to True Lacrosse, Luke Ducharme has also committed to Detroit. He’s a midfielder from Ontario – and Detroit’s success recruiting in Canada continues.

A recent IL news blurb mentions a player decommitting from Marquette to pick Hofstra. Not about Michigan per se, but it does point out potential difficulties for teams in non-hotbed areas to lure talent away from home.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s alum Tim Wyderko has been named a captain for Coast Guard’s MCLA team this spring.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle cites the Cherry Bomb tournament as one of several youth sporting events that helped boost the area’s economy this summer.

Ed Chima, one of the directors of Cherry Bomb Lacrosse, said the study could prompt more discussion with local business officials, particularly lodging interests, “in order for us to make it better for everybody — for the customers coming in and for the local businesses and citizens to enjoy what these folks might bring in.”

A lot of the games were already known (thanks to the other schools’ roster releases), but now we have the whole shebang. In addition to the conference schedule, Michigan will play some pretty good teams (Penn State, Hopkins) and some bad and/or unknown ones (High Point, St. Joe’s).

A few interesting points: A midweek night game outdoors against Detroit, a neutral-site game against Army, and another football spring game event (presumably that “TBA” for the Ohio State game).

It’s been way, way too long. Let’s hop right into the links.

Division-1

Michigan had its East-West scrimmage (won by the East 14-13) and alumni game just over a week ago. Even Wolverines coach John Paul – a club team player in the late 80s – suited up (pictured at right). You can see more pictures from the event here.

Neither Michigan nor Detroit has posted an official schedule yet, but both schools’ are starting to come together thanks to postings by other teams. For example, add a Michigan game at Fairfield to the schedule for March 14. That’s an ECAC conference matchup. Same with Loyola’s March 23 trip to Ann Arbor and Ohio State’s April 13th visit – possibly a replay of last year’s Battle at the Big House.

I’ve also heard Michigan will take on Yale in a neutral-site game, but no official confirmation yet.

Michigan’s Paxton Moore was profiled by the MGoBlue site. Same treatment for Charlie Keady.

The Detroit women will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference this spring, and that league will be eligible for an NCAA automatic bid in its first year of existence. Detroit women’s coach Laura Maness reviews the Titans’ fall:

MCLA

Multiple-weeks old fall ball scores are probably not so relevant, but Grand Valley bested Hope 14-6. Pictures from the game.

Lacrosse Magazine talks about Davenport’s move up to MCLA-1.

High School

Former Michigan State MCLA All-American Smith Atwood has been named the head lacrosse coach at Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Cranbrook’s Matthew Giampetroni represented the state of Michigan at Paul Rabil’s Project Nine even earlier this month.

Club/Youth

The U.S. Lacrosse Fall 7-on-7 takes place in Northville this weekend.

The Michigan State women’s team is hosting a winter training kick-ff at the Great Lakes Golf and Sports Complex in Auburn Hills a week from Saturday. You can find out more information on the event on their website, and see the flyer for it here.

The CanAm Showcase will take place at Detroit Country Day Nov. 10-11, featuring some of the top youth players in the area. The event is modeled after the Philly Lacrosse Showcase.

Heat Lacrosse won the Top Cheddar tournament in Wisconsin. A photo of the winning team via their Instagram site.

True Lacrosse is holding a winter league in Fenton for high school and middle school-aged players.

Mark Greaney of the Premier Lacrosse Group was a guest on WTKA a few weeks back. The former U-M assistant talks about PLG and area lacrosse in general.

Etc.

The U.S. Lacrosse Michigan Chapter will be having its seventh annual Hall of Fame induction Nov. 10. Visit this site for more details.

I’ll put together another post on expansion and realignment sometime soon (given that it’s been nearly three weeks since the last GLS post, that’s for a given definition of “soon”), but for now, feast your eyes on Denver coach Bill Tierney saying he’s heard rumors of SMU, USC, and… Minnesota? starting programs. Obviously the Gophers would be a big step for the Midwest.

Former Michigan midfielder Aaron Hodari is a co-founder of the news aggregator Glocal, along with Country Day (and Syracuse) alum Lincoln Cavalieri.

As always, if you have news tips, links, etc., pass them along to the e-mail or twitter.

Lax Links: Oct. 11, 2012

It feels like it’s been ages since the most recent Lax Links post, so let’s hop right into the content. Tips, etc. can find my inbox via e-mail or twitter.

Michigan

Coaching clinics – all of which I attended last year – return to Ann Arbor this offseason. The first one is tonight, e-mail Director of Operations Joe Hennessy for details.

The Wolverines continue their series introducing the first freshman class, and Californian Brendan Gaughan got the treatment, followed by Dan Kinek,

Quint Kessenich lists Michigan as the top new program in terms of potential.

Last year’s top goal, Emil Weiss, will not return to the U-M lacrosse team. Freshman Gerald Logan will be the starter.

Penn State will play at Michigan Feb. 9, and Air Force comes to town March 30. I expect to see the rest of the U-M schedule later this evening, so stay tuned.

U-M recap of the Nick Colleluori Classic. The event raised nearly 200k.

Michigan women’s coach Jenny Ulehla talks about the beginning stages of that program in Ann Arbor.

Detroit

Photos from the Alumni Day in Detroit. UDM story on the event.

UDM midfielder West Steen has been elected vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Other Collegiate

Detroit Catholic Central alum Jake Marmul returns to Notre Dame after a four-year career with the Irish. He will be an assistant coach for the Notre Dame women’s team.

George Washington University in Washington, D.C. has a coach with Michigan connections: Joe Opron played at Troy Athens High School and Oakland University. GWU is in its first year as an MCLA-1 program, participating in the SELC. The team is one of just a few major club squads participating near lacrosse hotbeds.

Grand Valley State has fallball contests this Sunday against Alma.

Ann Arbor Pioneer alum Mike Derrenberger has joined the staff at D-3 Manhattanville.

Recruiting

Not strictly GLS-related, but MDHigh.com, a Rivals.com network site, now has a message board dedicated to lacrosse recruiting. Given that most schools recruit the Baltimore area from time-to-time, it’s something to keep an eye on.

Inside Lacrosse touches on Michigan’s forays into New Jersey.

Etc.

An MCLA-2 team is apparently close to going the NCAA D-3 route, but don’t bother checking – there are no Michigan-based MCLA-2 squads whose schools are D-3 in athletics.

Division-1 Fall Ball Recaps

Both Michigan and Detroit played a pair of fall ball scrimmages over the weekend. The Wolverines were downed by both Marist and Mount St Mary’s, while the Titans split with a win over Bellarmine and a loss to Notre Dame.

Detroit

The Titans beat Bellarmine 11-9 and lost to Notre Dame 7-15. That’s a decent set of results against a team that was about as good as them last spring (but lost some important pieces) and one that was among the country’s best.

The official UDM site contains a bit of information about the games. As expected, the Titans went pretty deep into the bench, including all four active goalies getting some playing time.

Andrew Khalil post-event interview. A.J. Levell’s arms cameo. Alex Maini gets to use his own arms. Jamie Hebden talks about the service aspect of the event.

Inside Lacrosse took in the action, and talks about an impressive performer in Maini:

Right out of the gates, one player who immediately impressed was junior attackman Alex Maini. Maini had three goals and three assists in the opener against Bellarmine, and added one more against Notre Dame. His quick inside roll earned him a number of chances right on the doorstep, and his vision in finding open teammates was a key part of the offense, as well.

Photos from the event.

Michigan

Senior defenseman J.D. Johnson was honored with the team’s Nick Colleluori Award.

Inside Lacrosse’s recap includes pretty much nothing other than “these players saw the field.” Good effort. Lacrosse Magazine has pretty much more of the same. People can look at the roster to see where players are from, how about some observations about the product on the field?

Lax Mag does note that the offense is clearly improved (which is accurate, based on the live stream), but that there’s stil work do do (which is obvious, based on the scores).
