Michigan 12, Air Force 15

Losing a road game to what I believe to be a pretty good squad (bizarre loss to VMI notwithstanding) isn’t too disappointing for Michigan. The manner in which it happened is a bit more discouraging, but all told this is still a young team learning how to win at the Division-1 level.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Air Force 2014
Michigan Air Force
Faceoff Wins 17 Faceoff Wins 13
Clearing 19-23 Clearing 18-20
Possessions 42 Possessions 37
Goals 12 Goals 15
Offensive Efficiency .286 Offensive Efficiency .405

Unsurprisingly, Michigan won the faceoff battle, but semi-surprisingly, they got beaten up in the ride/clear game. The ride has actually been pretty good against all but the elite teams this year, and Air Force’s is good-not spectacular. U-M’s ride didn’t come through much, either.

What the day boils down to, though, is Michigan building a possession advantage and being unable to keep pace in efficiency. Air Force had a great offensive day, and Michigan’s was decent, but not good enough when you’re giving the opponent that level of production.

Notes

First, a disclaimer: the stream on Air Force’s moon-o-vision was pretty glitchy Saturday, so seeing things first-hand was sometimes a futile effort. They also didn’t show the score except between quarters, so it was easy to lose track of team momentum when the feed froze while one team looked poised to score, and next thing you know, there’s a faceoff (and you later find out that the other team was the one to find the back of the net).

Now, on to the show. This was a game determined by two poor quarters for Michigan, something of a throwback to Teams One and Two. It was the first and third in this one, with Air Force building a 6-2 lead in the first, and getting a couple more goals of distance in the third. U-M held even (three goals apiece) in the second, and outscored the Falcons 5-2 in the fourth.  With a young team, lapses are going to happen – Air Force achieved .750 efficiency on eight possessions in the first and .500 on eight more in the third – but it is encouraging to see the team not fold, as they might have in past years.

Brad Lott had a good day on faceoffs by normal standards, winning .577 against a team that’s just over 50% on the year, but by his standards, it wasn’t great. Compound that with a couple fast-break goals for the Falcons off the draw (including the tone-setting opening score), and it was just OK. He did get a fast-break score back for his second assist of the year.

The way the ride/clear game played out seemed – something becoming all too familiar in the recent couple games – to be on account of Michigan making unforced errors on its own clear. The ride wasn’t emphasized until late in the game when the Wolverines were trying to mount a comeback, so that’s no big deal. Although U-M only committed 15 turnovers all game, four of them coming on the clear can be discouraging.

The biggest issue for the Wolverines, of course, was defense. The quality of the feed made it tough to see, but it seemed like Robbie Zonino was not having a great day. The stats bear that out to a degree (though they don’t assign blame to the defenders, even when that’s the case), with only eight saves and 15 goals against. He started the game poorly – three saves and nine goals against at halftime – and by the time he settled in, the game was out of reach. He finished with eight saves and 15 GA.

Mack Gembis returned to the starting lineup on close defense, and though he didn’t pick up a GB, he had one caused turnover (on the other hand, he gave one back, as well). Sophomore Chris Walker had three GBs and freshman Andrew Hatton picked up one. LSM Chase Brown had three GBs as well.

Offensively, Kyle Jackson led the way with three goals and an assist, and it was an efficient day taking only five shots to get him there (the two he didn’t score on were off-target). David McCormack had three goals, Thomas Paras had two and an assist, and Dan Kinek had a goal and two assists. Ian King scored two goals on ten(!) shots, only four of those on cage. David Joseph – starting over Mike Hernandez at midfield – had two assists.

Naturally, Air Force had a lot of nice individual performances, with Mike Crampton (the ECAC offensive player of the week) and Kyle Cassady both notching six points. Holt alum Tommy McKee had four of his own. Defenseman Kyle O’Brien had three caused turnovers and five GBs. The Falcons played two goalies, with both right around .500 (a performance that should be good enough for Michigan to win most games).

Michigan recap. Air Force recapBoxscore.

Up Next

Despite the loss, Michigan will be playing in the ECAC Tournament. Their head-to-head victory over Bellarmine combined with the Knights’ loss to Fairfield means the Wolverines cannot finish behind BU.

That said, Michigan doesn’t have the intention to finish tied for last in the league, either way. They have two league games left, with the Battle at the Big House (following football’s spring game) against Fairfield up next. The Stags are just 1-0 in-conference, the lone win coming against Bellarmine. They are, however, the top LaxPower and Tempo-Free Lacrosse team in the league, so Michigan will have to be at its best to get a win Saturday.

Detroit 9, Quinnipiac 10 (OT)

This was a game that the Titans really should have won. UDM struggled in a few key areas, but still managed to hold a lead with just over a minute remaining in the contest.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Quinnipac 2014
Quinnipiac Detroit
Faceoff Wins 8 Faceoff Wins 15
Clearing 15-19 Clearing 11-17
Possessions 33 Possessions 36
Goals 10 Goals 9
Offensive Efficiency .303 Offensive Efficiency .250

The Titans took home the faceoff battle (more on that in a moment), but really struggled clearing the ball, which helped even out the overall possession game. In a relatively slow game by UDM standards – they’re under 70 total possessions in less than half of their games this year – possession was at a premium.

Quinnipiac made more of their opportunities, but in a game that is decided on an overtime dagger, it’s more about the overall flow of the game and the scoring than “we gave them one possession too many.”

Notes

I’ll begin on the faceoffs, where Damien Hicks confirmed what I’ve thought to be the case much of the year: he can compete against all but the elite faceoff specialists. He was winning the clamp on most draws, and had several clean wins mixed in. Another of my feelings about this unit was also confirmed though, in that the Titans wing play isn’t where it needs to be (which is contributing to the overall numbers that make it seem Hicks is struggling more than he actually is). It combined to give him a nice 14/22 day, with pole Jordan Yono throwing in another win.

There are no two ways to the describe the clear: it was simply bad. The Titans have to be able to get the ball to the offense to win games. They gave up two rideback goals, meaning those busts contributed even more directly than simply giving up possessions, they also gave up fast breaks. At this point in the season, there’s probably not much that can change in terms of coaching or personnel, it’s more about being mentally into the game and avoiding the silly mistakes.

Outside of the clear, I was OK with most of Detroit’s turnovers. Sure, you’d like to avoid a player throwing it away or having the stick checked out of his hands, but it’s going to happen from time to time. Getting it back on the other end – or winning the GB battle, which UDM did (with help from the faceoff dot) – will even that out over time.

Offensively, Scott Drummond led the way with three goals and an assist, and Alex Maini wasn’t far behind with three goals of his own (and most impressively, no turnovers, even though he was carrying a heavy load at times). Shayne Adams had two goals, Brandon Beauregard had two assists, and Tom Masterson had one of each. The Titans seemed to initiate more from the midfield than I recall in recent years (even games earlier this year), but I’m not sure if that was a matchup thing or a change in philosophy – or just the eyeball test fooling me.

Defensively, goalie Jason Weber had a good-not-great game by the numbers, but he was actually very impressive all contest. A number of the saves he made were on shots that looked like he had no chance of stopping, and many of the goals were of the same ilk. He made (almost) all the saves he should have, and then stole a couple more.

Chris Shevins – who has been a rotation player in the past, not a key performer – started and led the team with two caused turnovers. SSDM Nick Garippa picked up three ground balls, leading defensive players in that metric.

The overall GB battle went to the Titans, 36-30, but with the pseudo-dominance on faceoffs (Hicks and Yono’s combined effort gave UDM a +7 edge on faceoffs, with Hicks picking up seven GBs of his own), Quinnipiac was about even. As mentioned above, if the Titans are going to clear poorly, or just make mistakes, they have to be able to make up for it with simple effort.

Detroit recap. Box score. Photo gallery. Quinnipiac recap. Only semi-relevant, but Troy Dennis is up for an award. Vote for him.

Up Next

Detroit’s all-MAAC from here on out, and the next opponent is Marist, Saturday morning on Titan Field. The Red Foxes are Tempo-Free Lax’s No. 46 team, a handful of spots ahead of UDM. They have a good offense and a poor, defense, so it should be an exciting one.

Detroit’s 1-1 conference record currently has the squad tied for third in the MAAC with Manhattan, and in the seven-team league, three programs will miss the conference tourney in 2014. I don’t see them (or anyone) losing to Monmouth, but taking home games against the other middle-tier MAAC teams is important.

Lacrosse arrives at Detroit Southeastern

Warren De La Salle Mike Jolly Detroit Southeastern Jungaleers lacrosse

De La Salle coach Mike Jolly explains the historical significance prior to first faceoff.

DETROIT – Lacrosse has long been considered a pastime of the wealthy, privileged, and frankly, the white. That’s no longer the case in the City of Detroit, where yesterday afternoon, a new milestone was reached: Detroit Southeastern High School played its first-ever lacrosse game, scrimmaging the JV B squad from Warren De La Salle.

Just 16 players suited up for the Jungaleers – while the more-established De La Salle brought a couple dozen players – and the score didn’t end in their favor. The day was more about the experience for the first-time players, and making history.

“They’ve never had a real game in any situation they’ve ever been in,” said Jungaleers coach Brent Petrone. “They get to see how the game is played, the rules, how substitutions work, just the whole thing was great for them to not only see but be a part of with hands-on experience.”

The opponent was gracious in giving credit to Southeastern. Although his team was able to seemingly score at will, De La Salle coach and U.S. Lacrosse Michigan Hall-of-Famer Mike Jolly gave nothing but credit to the nascent program.

“They played hard, that’s the first thing, and they played with class,” Jolly said. “They’re getting good instruction from their coaches, and they should enjoy the game. It’s one of the most fun games to play.”

While the majority of De La Salle’s players have had sticks in their hands since fourth grade – or earlier – many of the Southeastern players picked up their crosse for the first time when team practices began just a couple weeks ago. The inexperience showed at times, but Southeastern was able to net a couple goals in the scrimmage (and a couple more with some subs from the Pilots’ squad after the Southeastern seniors had to leave early for a school function). They can take the experience against De La Salle as one to learn what they’re striving to become.

“They got to see how other individuals who have been playing for seven or eight years are playing the game, and kind of look at them as role models of the game, and how they can perform to their caliber eventually,” Petrone said. “It’s something to strive for. They got to see first how those kids are playing defense, how their midfielders are running plays, and their offense is running plays.”

The honor to be the first opponent for the city’s first public school lacrosse team is not lost upon Jolly. Even though his program is predominantly white and located in the suburbs, De La Salle has roots in the city long before its move out to Warren. The growth of the game in the urban area is an important part of stepping into the mainstream.

Warren De La Salle Pilots Southeastern Jungaleers lacrosse

The first goal in Southeastern program history finds the back of the net.

“It means everything to me,” Jolly said. “I told Coach Brent that if there was a competition, we would have fought hard to be the first one to play them. Our school originated over at City Airport, which is just a few miles away from here. To see what’s happening within the city of Detroit, hopefully their resurgence will mirror the growth of lacrosse. Just to come down and be a part of this is an honor for us.”

While Southeastern is the first public school lacrosse program in the city (University of Detroit Jesuit boasts the only other high school lacrosse program in Detroit), the hope is that it won’t be the last. First, the Jungaleers must reach sustainability, and that’s Petrone’s goal, with a two-year

“We just started out this year, we’re about two weeks into our season right now,” he said. “We were lucky enough to receive a two-year grant. We’re just hoping that we can get the kids in our schools excited about lacrosse, interested in it: just learning the rules and fundamentals of the game.

“We have a lot of great athletes at our school, and from there I just hope that these kids can actually do something over the next few years as they get those skills down, hopefully even looking for scholarships as they venture off into college. I’m hoping that other schools within our district will start getting programs set up next year. We’ll be able to not only face schools from the suburbs, but also in our own city.

“Then from there, just expanding and getting kids in this area excited about our sport. It’s something that’s foreign to them, but a lot can be great at it. It’s something that’s great for any kid, no matter where they’re from – income level, ethnicity – it’s a great sport for them to play.”

Petrone plays down the groundbreaking role he has played in bringing the game to a school that has had a hard enough time fielding a full football roster at a competitive level, much less a sport that most of its students have never played. However, as the game continues to grow, more Brent Petrones will be the ones to make it happen.

“I think that if we have coaches like Coach Petrone in schools being able to recruit kids to join the programs, and with administrative support, I see it growing,” Jolly said. “In the city of Baltimore, for example, the inner-city program has really thrived. It needs administrative support and dedicated coaches. The kids will come.”

At Charlevoix and Fairview on Detroit’s East Side, they’ve already started arriving.
