Tim: are you planning to do a piece on the Michigan and UD seasons?
Have not seen a wrap up on Detroit’s disappointing season ending loss to Marist in the MAAC Semi Finals… I know you will get around to it Tim, but I had a few thoughts on their season:
I thought this was a big step backward for The Titans after making a run last year…Detroit had the athletes and a nice schedule to really do some damage this year… Instead they faltered… Badly… What was different? Well they lost a great, and I mean Great, LSM in Jordan Houtby, he was going to be tough to replace no matter what…a talent like that only comes along once every so often… Detroit did not even come close to replacing his skill on the field this year. They could have done better at that position, but did not. AJ also graduated, but Weber did a fantastic job in the pipes as a freshman. Other than that, they had a loaded team coming back… What happened? Well, they played some close games, and they should have won them…I put the blame on Coaching… Here’s why… Face offs… Was it the FOGOS? Maybe, they had a couple good guys with some skill, but they never could settle on Hicks or Corcran at times… Hicks would be doing well, and then they would bring on Corcran… Very inconsistent. Recruiting a top notch face off guy should be a big priority… When the FOGOS would battle, the Titans did not come up with the ball… Wingers were consistently beaten badly. No size or toughness… At the end of the season, they had a back up goalie on one of the wings… Small and undersized… Why? they had a battle tested group of DMids that they rarely used in that role… Speaking of DMids, they rarely had a chance to push tempo on odd man rushes…. opting to go and set up on offense instead. No second line Offensive Mids… That line was not good all year… Slow and prone to turnovers, Yet no alternative was ever tried… Some top skill on the first line was not utilized… Birney struggled with his shot and turnovers all year… I don’t blame him as much as I do on coaching… Bearegard, Drummond were good, but with Birney facing a LSM or being doubled, their output should have been even better…Teams got a break when the second line came on, as there was a huge drop off… Adams was very good, but when teams doubled him, the offense went south… Maini was the biggest problem all year… He had good numbers yes, but in comparison his turnovers were astronomical he went games with 6 and 7 TO’s consistently!!!… unacceptable, and it killed offensive momentum…at key moments in games especially. Defense was ok, but slow and got exposed at times… Picking up GB’s at critical junctures was also very noticeable with the exception of Bitetti… I just think that the coaching has reached it’s critical apex…You look at programs like Marquette and High Point… New teams that came on like gangbusters… Not a huge difference in talent, but the difference is coaching… Detroit found themselves in winnable games VS Bellermine, Michigan, Quinnipiac, Siena and came away with losses at home…No excuse…When it came to crunch time, they failed… I think Adams did a good job for what he got thrown into at the last minute, but the other coaches are suspect…If Detroit wants to go to the next level, they need new coaches, or they will languish where they are, or get worse…They had talent but they had players in the wrong positions and their strategy was poor. Certain player were allowed to continue to make mistakes, while others got yanked and rarely got an opportunity…So, does Detroit want to be a competitive team in the future or be happy with 5 or 6 win seasons? To go to the next level… they need a change.
I actually wasn’t all that disappointed with UDM to be honest. Last year they won 5 games, and this year they won 6. They easily could have won a couple more and were quite competitive in their conference. They played everyone in the MAAC very close, despite losing some very key contributors from last year’s team.
I think their realistic goal should be to win the conference, which obviously won’t happen every year, but as long as they win every few and are consistently challenging for it they are in good shape.
Seems like you can say the same thing about Michigan’s program.
I agree but with one exception: I think a realistic goal for UM next year is to achieve a .500 record. With Maryland and Hopkins joining the Big Ten lax conference, UM is a few years away from thinking about competing for the conference title.
