Wow! What a recruiting class. Just going off the high schools the recruits attend, this class is loaded with players from some of the best high school teams in the country. St. Paul’s, Boy’s Latin, Choate, John Jay, etc. It would have been great to see at least one in-stater from Michigan, but you’ve got to hand it to Coach Paul and crew for attracting a top notch class after only two wins in the first two years.
They did have one Michigan kid. Jason Alessi from Brother Rice. Also a stellar football player. Have heard rumors he’s entertaining football offers, which would explain why he’s missing. Would be a shame. They lost Drew Barksdale in last year’s class to Boston College football. Would be nice to keep those kinds of athletes. Tim probably knows what’s going on with Alessi. Any shot he could end up as a two-sport athlete at Michigan?
Alessi is entertaining football offers (most of them walkon opportunities at this point), and depending on what happens in that regard, he’ll sign in the spring signing period. At this point, I expect him to end up at Michigan – he’s a big fan, his older brother was a student-athlete at Michigan, and of course he’s already committed – but the question is whether that’s to play football or lacrosse. He picked up a preferred walkon offer from the U-M football team this week, and it’s something he’s very interested in.
As for two-sport athlete at Michigan, I don’t really see it. Neither the football staff nor the lacrosse staff is very high on a kid splitting his attention between two sports. They would bother prefer him to choose. Maybe if he comes in to play one sport he could also walk on to the other as an upperclassman, but to come in as a two-sport athlete seems unlikely.
Jason Alessi from Brother Rice just committed to Yale for football.
