Oxford Collegiate Lacrosse Challenge

Press release. UDM and Michigan weekend previews forthcoming.

EAST LANSING – The first Oxford Collegiate Lacrosse Challenge, which is set for Saturday, March 30, 2013 and played at Wildcat Stadium at Oxford High School features top college lacrosse talent on both sides of the gender aisle, while benefiting the local Alzheimer’s Research organizations. The event will feature women’s squads from Michigan State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and the University of Toledo, while the Michigan State men’s’ team will host the No. 2 ranked club collegiate lacrosse team from western Canada, Simon Fraser.

The Oxford High School Lacrosse varsity boys and girls lacrosse teams will host the lacrosse challenge. “We are really excited to bring top flight lacrosse action to northern Oakland County and I think those who attend will certainly enjoy the day,” said Greg Normand, Michigan State’s head women’s lacrosse coach. “You rarely see men and women playing on the same field in the same day. It’s a great opportunity to see some really good players.”

Organizers said the event would benefit the Oxford High School Blue Turf Project and the Oakland County Alzheimer’s Foundation. Players and fans will be donating to the worthy projects, Normand said.

“We’re not asking a ton, we’re just encouraging each player to drop a couple of dollars in the jar to assist with some really serious causes,” Normand said. “The Alzheimer’s Foundation was added to the event as a benefactor after the fifth annual Battagaway Prep Lacrosse Invitational was canceled Saturday, March 16 because of weather.”

Normand said the Oxford men’s and women’s lacrosse programs donated more than $2,500 last year to the foundation and didn’t want to miss assisting this year and found another opportunity to work for a local charity.

“This is just another chance for us to help those less fortunate…and you know the saying about one door closing and another opening,” he said.

The action gets underway at 9:15 am when Michigan State entertains Western Michigan and the day ends with the Spartan men battling with Simon Fraser.

9 am – Western Michigan v Michigan State Women
10:30 am – Western Michigan v Toledo
12:00 pm – Central Michigan v Michigan State Women
1:30 pm – Central Michigan v Toledo
3:00 pm – Toledo v Michigan State Women
4:30 pm – Simon Fraser v Michigan State Men

Michigan 3, Loyola 10

If you ask me, there are a few ways to look at this result. First is that Michigan regressed slightly from what had been rapidly improving form. Another is that Loyola played things a little slower and choked the life out of the game, leading to a less-than-impressive score (that, we can detrmine from the numbers). A third is that Josh Hawkins is simply that important to the Hounds, and it was his absence that led to mediocre early-season results from Loyola. I think we’ll see it’s a combination of all three.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Loyola 2013
Loyola Michigan
Faceoff Wins 11 Faceoff Wins 6
Clearing 19-19 Clearing 22-24
Possessions 32 Possessions 30
Goals 10 Goals 3
Offensive Efficiency .313 Offensive Efficiency .100

As you can see, the slowdown factor was certainly in play. This was Michigan’s second-slowest game of the year, behind only the Fairfield slugfest (that one, of course, felt a little better since U-M stayed close).

The Greyhounds’ offense was very good, but actually held below its season average output, a very good performance for a struggling defense. The U-M offense was semi-inept, however, and was one of the big differences in the game.

Notes

So, let’s take a look at what Hawkins did to determine how much Loyola has (possibly) missed him. This was by far the Hounds’ best defensive performance of the year (albeit against the worst offense). Point, Hawkins. He also caused two turnovers and picked up three ground balls. Point, Hawkins. He added a goal. Point (literally) Hawkins. While Michigan still isn’t winning this game without Hawkins in the lineup, he’s clearly a boost for Loyola. Even without adjusting for his return, Loyola is expected to win almost every game left on their schedule, so look for a strong run to close the year.

Going to Michigan, the star of the game (as always) was Gerald Logan. He stopped 15 shots, and of the ten he let in, four were assisted. He also caused a turnover and picked up seven ground balls (meaning many of his saves likely ended Loyola possessions). That’s good. When the defense in front of him continues its trend of growing up, he’ll eventually be a star.

Michigan had no multi-point scorers, so I might as well name everybody who got on the board. Peter Kraus, Will Meter, and Thomas Paras (welcome back!) each notched a goal, while Kyle Jackson had the team’s only assist.

There were negatives: Volume shooting was an issue, for one (though a reminder that it’s not necessarily a bad thing, just a thing, without reviewing the film you can’t add negative value to shots not on goal). Meter took four shots, only one on goal, Paras took five, three on goal, and Mike Hernandez took seven shots, only two of them on goal, and didn’t find the back of the net.

Turnovers were depressed slightly, though the pace of play comes into that as well. Kraus, Meter, Hernandez, and Paras each committed two, while David McCormack had four. U-M mostly held serve with Loyola from that perspective, since I’m not expecting them to go toe-to-toe with one of the better teams in the nation.

Defensively, Mack Gembis and Chase Brown each caused two turnovers, while Charlie Keady and Logan had one apiece. Logan’s seven ground balls led the team, while Dan Kinek was the only other Wolverine with more than one.

Speaking of getting smoked in the ground ball battle, that surely plays into a poor faceoff percentage for Brad Lott to a degree, and he went 6/17 on the day. The faceoff unit will be one that steadily improves as Michigan’s team toughens up and simply improves its skill on ground balls.

Staying on the topic of ground balls and moving into discussion of Loyola players other than Hawkins, longpole Scott Ratliff gobbled up eight GBs on the day, more than a quarter of his team’s total. That’s a heck of a day, especially considering he captains a defense that was stout all afternoon. JOe Fletcher, not to be outdone, caused three turnovers and picked up four GBs. The goalies were hardly tested, letting in three goals and making seven saves.

Mike Sawyer and Matt Herrewyers each had three goals for the Hounds, while Justin Ward added two. No other Loyola player has a multi-point output.

Elsewhere

The official boxscore. Michigan recapPhoto gallery. Loyola recap. Herreweyers and Fletcher picked up conference honors thanks in part to their output against U-M. Game highlights may be added on mgoblue.com, but for now those with all-access can re-watch the entire game.

Up Next

The numbers don’t like Michigan very much, but this weekend’s matchup against Air Force is likely the best shot at a conference win this year. The Falcons are the ECAC’s second-worst team by the numbers, and the home game factor (in what should be much better weather, hopefully drawing a bigger crowd) could give Michigan a slight boost.

Still, unless Hawkins’ return and the grind-it-out style of the Loyola game were bigger factors than you’d think, Michigan’s slight backslide in this one means I have a hard time seeing the Wolverines win. Returning to the form of the previous four games – and learning to seal the deal – will be the minimum for staying competitive, much less getting the win.

Detroit 11, VMI 6

So, Detroit removes itself from Reverse Survivor contention (as expected). A dominating defensive performance and a more-than-good enough offensive output were the story of the day.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

VMI 2013
VMI Detroit
Faceoff Wins 8 Faceoff Wins 12
Clearing 16-23 Clearing 15-19
Possessions 35 Possessions 38
Goals 6 Goals 11
Offensive Efficiency .171 Offensive Efficiency .289

Detroit did just about everything as expected except score. Faceoffs were better than .500, and the ride was ramped up for really the first time this year.

The defense was borderline dominant (thanks in no small part to that ride), and the offense did enough to get the win, for sure. However, against what had been the second-worst defense in the country, more scoring could have been kinda nice.

Notes

It would be unfair to him to start with any player other than Jamie Hebden. The Brother Rice grad set a new program record with seven caused turnovers, and he added six GBs. Thats, like, kinda good. Teammate Jordan Houtby (previous holder of the CT record) caused three himself. Two other Titans, longpole John Dwyer and goalie(!) A.J. Levell caused two apiece.

Speaking of Levell, he had a very nice performance, making 10 saves without seeing a whole lot of the ball. Only one of VMI’s five goals on him was assisted, but since I didn’t get a chance to see the game in person, I wouldn’t pin that on softies (though Levell has been known to let in one or two, while evening things out by stealing a goal or two). Damie Danseglio got his first action of the year in relief, allowing a goal and making one save.

On faceoffs: Damien Hicks had an excellent day, winning 11 of 15 draws. Brandon Davenport was 0/1 and Ryan Tarzia 1/4 in relief, making VMI’s numbers a little prettier. Had Hicks played the whole game, this would have been the margin I expected. Tyler Corcoran did not see game action.

Offensively, the Titans shared the load – again, if they had leaned on stars, the output could have been a bit better. Alex Maini and Tom Masterson had two and two apiece to lead the way atop the scoreboard with four total points. Andy Hebden and Scott Drummond (both underclassmen, I’ll note) had three apiece. Brandon Beauregard had a goal and an assist.

This one was decided early. The Titans led 7-1 early in the third, and let off the gas. VMI scored three straight in the late third to bring things within 7-4, but never seriously challenged. UDM’s offense looks disappointing on its face, but clearly the Titans could have poured it on had they chosen to.

The defensive renaissance, as predicted, returned. The Keydets turned it over on .829 of possessions (every possession that they didn’t score on, though there is obviously some noise within the data), 20 of them forced by the Titans. After seeming passive this year, ramping up the pressure – especially against the weaker foes of conference play – will be the key to success.

Overall, it’s hard to peg this as a disappointing performance, even though the numbers may not jump off the page (at least offensively). VMI’s adjusted defense improved significantly based on the game, but again, what would UDM have gained by winning 14-4 instead of 11-6? Probably not a whole lot.

Up Next

The “just get a win” monkey is off the Titans’ back, and don’t look now but they’re playing pretty well in the last two or three games. Turning that momentum into results is another story altogether, but there’s certainly no risk of pitching an 0-fer. Getting to 3-3 in-conference seems reasonable with a stolen game or two, and that means a chance to participate in the MAAC Tournament.

The next test comes on the road against a middling Jacksonville team. While the Dolphins have been a better team than UDM to date, that’s a winnable contest, as much as almost any (conference outing) left on the schedule. Get the W, and a three-game winning streak is on the line the following weekend against Manhattan. Add in a mid-week contest at Michigan following a trip to Siena, a game at Marquette, and the Titans can really rebound to close the year.
