Detroit 13, Canisius 7

So this game wasn’t even as close as the final score, which is good for the Titans. They dominated start-to-finish with a few lapses in there that never threatened to give away the game.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Canisius 2013
Canisius Detroit
Faceoff Wins 16 Faceoff Wins 8
Clearing 14-15 Clearing 21-23
Possessions 33 Possessions 32
Goals 7 Goals 13
Offensive Efficiency .212 Offensive Efficiency .406

As expected, the Titans were pretty much dominated on faceoffs, but they made up for it my getting stops and successfully clearing the ball. Canisius had a pretty poor offensive day, and Detroit blew up on that side of the ball.

Notes

In the preview, I mentioned that Canisius’ Mike Moran was going to win his share of faceoffs, and the key was not letting him turn that into offense. I was half right: he certainly didn’t get much offense. However, he was also yanked for ineffectiveness, and Brandon Bull entered to dominate on draws for Canisius instead. Bull is not strictly a FOGO, so his offensive stats aren’t 100% attributable to clean wins (and it didn’t seem like Detroit was giving up a whole lot of instant offense in that phase of the game), but 8/10 is a nice day for him.

It was the offense that was the story of the game for Detroit. In one of their slower contests this season (only slogs against Quinnipiac and Jacksonville featured fewer possessions), they were a goal away from tying a season-high in goals. Are things coming together, is Canisius’s (pretty bad) defense even worse than we previously realized? Who knows.

One thing I do know is that the output was very balanced. Four different Titans notched three points, and three more had a pair of points. That’s solid. Tom Masterson and Mike Birney had two goals and an assist, Brandon Beauregard and Alex Maini flipped that ratio. All told, 11 different UDM players notched at least one point, and nine of the 13 goals were scored.

It wasn’t all good, especially for Maini. With six turnovers, he was responsible for a third of the times UDM coughed it up. There’s still the question of whether he’s “the guy” who can take the majority of the ball-handling duties, and sloppy days certainly add to that. Still, he blended in on the positive side of things, so tightening things up may not be that significant a change for him.

Defensively, A.J. Levell had an outstanding day – and one which earned him MAAC Defensive POY honors. Some of the saves he had to make weren’t on particularly threatening shots, but others definitely were, and when you make 18 saves, you more than did your part. He still has an odd tendency to make ridiculous stops while allowing a head-scratcher in every once in a while, but you take the bad with the good. In this one, it was very good.

Jordan Houtby caused four turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Jamie Hebden and Mike Spuller both caused a couple TOs. Nothing to see here, that’s simply business as usual – at least for Houtby and Hebden.

Other than faceoffs, it wasn’t an exceptional day for Canisius. Only Joe Rautenstrach had multiple points (and to be fair he had four with a pair of goals and a pair of assists). D.J. Giacobbo caused three turnovers and picked up six ground balls.

On the (very) bad side of things, starting goalie Alex Govenettio allowed seven goals… and made zero saves… in just ELEVEN MINUTES OF ACTION. Once he was pulled, Kyle Bell had a much better day while seeing significantly less action. The Titans came out hot – and they needed to – and put the game away very early.

Up Next

The Detroit victory buys them at least one more game this weekend. Marist tore through the MAAC slate until the very end… at which time the Red Foxes lost to by far the worst team in the country in Manhattan.

While I don’t expect Marist to lay an egg two games in a row, the loss to the previously hapless Jaspers (who lost by FOUR GOALS to VMI the previous time they played. That’s awful) certainly shows that the Red Foxes aren’t invisible. Given that Detroit’s coming off perhaps the best game of the year and Marist of easily the worst… who knows?

Michigan Preview: Denver

The Wolverines got their win last weekend, and that’s good because Denver would be a really, really tough test. Showing progress is the goal, not outscoring the opponent.

Tempo-Free Profile

The TempoFreeLax.com numbers displayed here are adjusted for strength of schedule. Denver has played one of the toughest schedules in the country, No. 13 of 63. They’ve put up these numbers against really good teams, one of which Michigan is not.

Denver 2013
Pace 61.54 (56)
Poss% 50.50 (30)
Off. Eff. 43.31 (1)
Def. Eff. 32.42 (43)
Pyth% 72.31 (13)

Denver has been one of the best possession teams in the country the past couple years, but that hasn’t continued in 2013. They’re just ahead of average, thanks to mediocre faceoffs and not the slightest interest in riding.

What Denver has carried over from the last few years is an absolutely lethal offense. They’re the best in the country, and if you’re thinking about Michigan’s defense and cowering in the corner by the time you get to this sentence, you’re not alone. That should be a problem.

Although Denver has been at or slightly above average defensively in the past couple years (if you’re not going to ride, you’d better not screw up in 6v6 defense… or you can just pour in goals on the other end so it doesn’t matter), that hasn’t continued this season. They’re on the borderline of the bottom quartile nationally. That’s an exploitable area for Michigan.

Add it all up, and you have the country’s No. 13 team. The numbers take into account scoring margin (and actually not actual wins and losses in the least), but it’s worth noting that the Pioneers have walked a razor’s edge at times this year. They have single-goal losses to Notre Dame and Fairfield this season, and one-goal wins over Ohio State, Air Force, Bellarmine, and Loyola. Although they’re going to be the conference’s one-seed, they haven’t done it by a whole lot.

Offense

This is where the carnage lives.

Senior attack Eric Law has put up 29 goals and 25 assists. Sophomore midfielder Wes Berg has 37 goals and 11 assists. Senior midfielder Cameron Flint has 25 goals and seven assists. Sophomore attack Eric Adamson has 21 goals and nine assists.

Beyond that there’s a pretty big dropoff in total points, but freshman attack Gordie Koerber and junior midfielder Jeremy Noble have 17 points and 15 points, respectively, despite barely making it into half of Denver’s games. Koerber should be in and Noble out for this one, for what it’s worth.

Senior attack Colin Scott has six goals and nine assists to round out double-digit scorers. He’s also the only player among the leading scorers with more assists than goals (though right behind him is Taylor Young with one and six).

Clearly, this is an offense not heavily predicated on the assist – the Pioneers have absurd scoring numbers despite helping each other out just over half the time. It also has a high level of individual talent, as demonstrated by the prolific scoring ability despite that. Has Michigan had a problem dealing with exceptional attackmen this year? No? Great!

Just kidding. Law is going to be big trouble.

Defense

Denver mostly packs things in on defense, and although their play between the pipes hasn’t been elite, slowing things down and destroying world on offense is more than enough to win a whole lot of games.

It’s been a two-man platoon between sophomore Ryan LaPlante and junior Jamie Faus – embarrassment of riches, that – with the two putting up strikingly similar numbers. LaPlante sees quite a but more time and saves barely more of shots faced (.562 against .557). Neither has played enough to qualify for the NCAA’s rankings, but both would be just outside the top 10. They’re right in Gerald Logan’s range playing behind much better talent.

The talent in front of those keepers has been led by senior Kyle Hercher, sophomore Cannon Carson, and junior Harley Brown (in and out of the lineup this season, currently in). Hercher and Brown are the only two Pioneers with double-digit caused turnovers (in fact the only two with more than five CTs this year). That’s especially impressive for Brown, given his limited appearances. Freshman Pat Karole and redshirt junior Drew Babb are both in heavy rotation.

As noted above, this defense doesn’t rely on causing turnovers or riding opponents into oblivion so much as preventing them from finding good shots, and trusting the good goalkeepers to make enough saves. That’s happened on an inconsistent basis this year.

Special Teams

Like many other Pioneers, faceoff specialist Chase Carraro (who also stays in on offense much of the time) has missed plenty of time due to injury. That has led to struggles on faceoffs, since Carraro is really good there. He wins .550 of draws taken, while his backups (mostly Chace Calkin) are well below .500. You don’t want to see Carraro, but it seems you will. Unfortunately for Michigan, Carraro appears to be in the lineup, mitigating some of DU’s disappointing faceoff ability on the season.

As mentioned above, Denver doesn’t ride. Just doesn’t do it. You’d think a team that plays its home games at altitude would emphasize forcing opponents to prove their stamina and athleticism, but that’s just not the case. Any of Michigan’s problems there are going to be self-inflicted damage. In the other direction, the Denver clear is about as perfect as it comes, too. With Michigan’s porous transition defense, U-M would be best-served to simply drop back and prevent DU from running in this one.

For a team with a really good offense, Denver’s man-up is actually kind of poor. As in, they convert less on the man-up than they do in 6v6. That’s weird. Even if Michigan plays a sloppy game from a penalty standpoint, it’s not going to kill them. Meanwhile, the Denver D is pretty good, which you’d expect from a team that packs it in as a normal strategy.

Big Picture

Michigan’s season ends at 2 p.m. Mountain Time no matter the result of this one, so that makes it slightly less depressing that this should be a pretty rough time. The Wolverines’ goal should be to find a few things to carry into the off-season with optimism. That’s about all there is to it.

Denver has shown some serious cracks, even against mediocre opposition, so Michigan should be able to put up a few goals. They’ll also be able to slow down the Denver offen… HAHAHA j/k.

Predictions

Simple one here. Clearly I’m not expecting a competitive game.

  • Chase Carraro wins 60% of his faceoffs, and turns a few of those wins into instant offense. Michigan starts with Brad Lott, but if he struggles, will be quick to go with Kevin Wylie (a Colorado native) before dipping into the longpoles to muck things up, hope for 50/50 balls, and play defense.
  • A Denver player will put up double-digit points. That’s most likely to be Eric Law, given that Michigan’s biggest issues defensively have been revolving around that one great attackman.
  • Gerald Logan is going to see a ton of shots. As in like 40. If he saves more than half of them (despite Denver’s talent, I think he will), it’ll be a huge day for his total numbers on the year, likely pushing him back to the top of the nation’s charts.
  • The Wolverines will show serious signs of life on offense. That will be a confidence-builder given that Denver’s a name team and likely NCAA Tournament participant (even though it’s because they’re secretly really bad on D).

Keeping this one close is the best Michigan can hope for, but it’s also a pretty darn lofty goal. Fortunately, Denver’s typical strategy outside of transition (the phase of the game that destroyed Michigan in this one last year, and has been an issue in 2013 as well) is to slow things down on both sides of the ball. Playing a clean game and making the Pioneers earn what they inevitably get is OK. Denver 16, Michigan 7.

Tempo-Free Profile

The TempoFreeLax.com numbers displayed here are adjusted for strength of schedule. Although Canisius has one of the easier schedules in the country (No. 43 of 63), it’s actually by far the toughest among MAAC teams.

Canisius 2013
Pace 60.67 (59)
Poss% 51.24 (18)
Off. Eff. 24.44 (59)
Def. Eff. 38.64 (60)
Pyth% 21.99 (55)

One thing stands out about Canisius. Well, that’s not true. Several things stand out. But the first one that catches my eye is that they’re sloooooow. Going against one of the fastest teams in the country in Detroit, that’s an area to watch.

In terms of team quality, rather than team style, there’s one thing that Canisius is really good at: possessing the ball. That’s primarily accomplished through quality in the faceoff department, since they’re not particularly good on the clear and terrible on the ride. The possession advantage allows them to be one of the better teams in the MAAC despite…

Being pretty terrible on both offense and defense. Canisius is actually significantly worse than Manhattan (this is notable. Manhattan is easily one of the worst teams in the country) on both offense and defense, and the possession advantage has allowed them to maintain some modicum of respectability.

Overall, Canisius is simply not a good team… but that puts them only one slot behind Detroit nationally. This should still be an even battle.

Offense

With only one game remaining in the regular season, the number of Griffins who have reached double-digit points on the year is… six. Sure, that relates to pace of play, but when your opponents are outscoring you by nearly 100 points on aggregate, maybe you just can’t score.

The dudes who can score are led by sophomore midfielder Tim Edwards. He drives the whole deal for Canisius with 19 goals and 19 assists, giving him a hand in more than 40% of the Griffins’ total goals. Shut him down, and an already-bad offense should be inept. Obviously that’s not America’s Easiest Task.

Edwards’ complementary pieces are all goal-heavy, so he’s the primary feeder. Freshman attack Vince Gravino and senior midfielder Rautenstrauch are in the mid-20s in total points. Sophomores Brandon Bull (midfielder) and Austin Romantic (attack) are both in the mid-teens. As mentioned above, none is a serious feeding threat.

The next two leading scorers have each played in a grand total of five games. Billy Jacobbi recently re-entered the lineup, so he could be a serious weapon. with only about half the team’s season to determine that, the freshman midfielder is mostly an unknown – but a potentially dangerous piece. ody Gould has been out of the lineup lately.

Since Canisius’ options are so limited, it seems like a pretty easy matchup for the Titans: put your best player (LSM Jordan Houtby) on Edwards, and slow him down enough that the rest of the Griffins can’t create for themselves against a pretty good D.

Defense

The Canisius D is the fourth-worst in the country. That’s no bueno. Two goalies have seen significant action behind that unit, led by Alex Govenettio. He’s saved just .444 of shots faced (still much better than backup Nick Carrasco at .371). The key in this one? Put a lot of shots up, and put them on cage. The Griffins’ netminders probably just can’t handle it.

Opponents aren’t exactly racking up assists, so it’s not like the goalies are just getting killed by their defense, either. Well, that’s not quite true. They are facing a ton of shots per possession, so a lot of rubber means a lot of opportunities to score goals. Still, it seems these netminders will gladly oblige you on those opportunities.

On defense, just a couple players have significant caused turnovers – which I guess is expected out of a defense that’s all-around terrible. Sophomore Adam Donner has racked up 11 CTs, and and senior shot-stick Kevin Lalley has nine. Your starters alongside Donner have been junior Adam Knopfke and a rotating cast of characters.

Given the Detroit offense’s diversification in terms of scoring distribution (even if the overall offense has improve by just a small increment), there should be enough holes to get off a lot of shots. The key is putting them on cage for the goalies to not save.

Special Teams

Finally, something Canisius is really good at. Senior Mike Moran is a really good faceoff specialist, and picks up about two-thirds of his wins on his own. Detroit has oscillated between good and poor, with the overall result being just below average. In this one, I see preventing clean wins as the key. Canisius can’t do anything when they get the ball, so as long as they don’t get instant offense from the draw, you’re good. Winning a third of draws and allowing just one or two fast-break opportunities from this phase will be more than enough to consider it a W.

Canisius has a pretty good clear, ranked in about the same territory as UDM’s similarly good ride. The Titans seem to have two phases: one where they turn on the heavy ride, and one where they drop back and if the opponents mess up on their own, so be it. This seems like a good opportunity to use the latter, with some one-on-one pressure used, as well. Coming in the other direction, Detroit has struggled getting the ball up the field, and Canisius hasn’t forced a whole lot of failed clears. Just don’t shoot yourself in the foot (which, unfortunately, has been the large-scale problem with the Titan clear this season).

Canisius plays a relatively clean brand of lacrosse, so going up against Detroit’s roving band of thugs (in the eyes of officials at least, and not always unjustifiably so) should see the penalty balance in their favor. Fortunately, both their man-up and man-down are bad. Despite spending more time in the box, Detroit should come out even in power play situations.

Big Picture

The stakes for this one are clear: survive and advance. A win qualifies the Titans for the MAAC Championships next weekend in Buffalo, and eliminates the Griffins from playing in the tourney on their home turf.

A loss, and the season’s over (but you have an open weekend to make up that Michigan game! I’m joking, I’m joking). That would be a 2-10 finish and a serious disappointment on the year. So don’t lose.

Predictions

Before looking into Canisius, I had thought I would pick UDM to lose. But man, the Griffins are bad.

  • Multiple Titans cause three or more turnovers. Your top two candidates are obvious in Jordan Houtby and Jamie Hebden. Canisius is sloppy, and the Titans thrive on creating havoc. That will happen.
  • Kyle Moran dominates faceoffs, and actually manages to turn a clean win or two into quick scoring for the Griffins. Coach Holtz tries at least a couple different players at the dot to slow things down.
  • The Titans launch a season-high in shots. That’s both because they should against really iffy goalies, and because it will be available against a defense that lets opponents shoot at will.
  • A freshman leads the Titans in scoring. I’m lookin’ at you, Andy Hebden.

As mentioned above, I was too concerned about the Titan psyche to predict a win, but this just seems like a game that shouldn’t bee too much trouble. The Griffins’ strengths are neutralized by those of the Titans, and UDM has the advantages in most other aspects. That sounds like a win, no? Detroit 13, Canisius 8.
