Michigan 7, Yale 13

Michigan has played pretty well against top competition this year, so Saturday’s result was a little bit disappointing. When some of the things U-M is planning to rely on don’t go their way though, it’s bound to happen against top-10 teams.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Yale 2014
Yale Michigan
Faceoff Wins 15 Faceoff Wins 9
Clearing 13-15 Clearing 17-18
Possessions 31 Possessions 29
Goals 13 Goals 7
Offensive Efficiency .419 Offensive Efficiency .241

Yale was fairly dominant on faceoffs (three of Michigan’s nine wins came in the fourth quarter with the game well out of hand), and though the Bulldogs had fewer clearing attempts, that faceoff advantage allowed them to win the possession battle.

Michigan’s offense was only sort of bad – especially given the caliber of defense the Wolverines were facing, but the defense once again struggled, and against an offense that has been good-not-great all season.

Notes

The game started very well for Michigan, with Yale not even getting a shot off until nearly five minutes had elapsed. However, once an extra-man tally got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs (followed by a quick goal off the faceoff), the floodgates opened to a certain extent. Michigan was never any closer than two goals once the score passed 3-1 Yale. A big part of Yale’s early success (despite offensive struggles) was the play of goalie Eric Natale. He’s really, really good, and was the difference early in the game until the Yale offense and possession game started clicking.

“We tested him, and the kid made some really great saves,” said freshman attack Ian King. “The kid made some really great saves and he deserves it. I don’t know his save percentage but the kid played well.”

Faceoffs were once again an issue for Michigan, and although Michigan was trying to mostly take away transition (though they still gave up two transition goals off faceoffs), they need to get more wins there with a talent like Brad Lott on draws. He’s struggled in recent weeks, and that’s something that a team like Michigan – which can’t match up man-for-man basically anywhere else on the field – won’t be able to overcome often.

“[Yale’s Dylan Levings is] one of the top faceoff guys in the country and we didn’t do horribly against him,” said Michigan coach John Paul. “Our strategy was to not give up transition against their faceoff game. We wanted to win some and we did, but we wanted to make sure we didn’t give up transition and we didn’t, so we executed what we wanted to execute there. We wanted to win more of them.”

King was one of the stars for Michigan. Two goals on seven shots (six on the cage, just another indication of Natale’s great day) won’t turn many heads, but his second score of the day – wriggling away from a hold check to finish a bounce shot – certainly did. He also eclipsed Trevor Yealy’s single-season record for goals, one that he’ll likely break a couple more times in his career.

Midfielder David Joseph had a goal and an assist, and Mike Hernandez had two assists. The surprise performer was newly-minted midfielder Brendan Gaughan. The redshirt freshman got his second game action of the season after switching from attack, and notched two goals of his own.

“Brendan Gaughan who has been playing great in practice, buried a couple, maybe earning more time going forward,” Paul said. In practice right now he’s switched positions. I don’t know how long that’ll last but right now he’s a middie.

“We’re pretty attack-heavy on this team, so we’ve been moving guys around through the course of the season. Brendan had been playing midfield most of the season on our scout team. He was tearing up our starters as a scout team midfielder, only because we needed him in that position on the scout team. It kind of became apparent that we thought he had a good skill set there.”

Gaughan was an Under Armour All-American out of high school, but missed his freshman season after knee surgery. He’s getting back on the field in his new role.

“It was a slow process coming back,” Gaughan said. “I’m trusting Coach Danehy and coach Paul to make the rigbht decisions. I’m very thankful for them having trusted me to go on the field, and I’m glad that the entire line on offense produced when I was on offense. It wasn’t just me, it was the entire offense.

“The line I always say: ‘high school is high school, and everyone’s good in high school.’ This is Division-1, so having not played last year, it wasn’t what I wanted, but I’m really glad to be back and helping the team out as much as I can.”

Michigan’s defense was an issue, with Yale’s Brandon Mangan notching a goal and five assists – he’s really good- and fellow attackmen Jeff Cimbalista (four goals) and Conrad Oberbeck six goals and two assists) the primary beneficiaries of that. A lot of Yale’s scoring came frighteningly close to the crease – which has been a theme of Michigan’s defense through three years of varsity play – and that’s something Michigan wants to shore up the most.

“We’re doing a much better job on-ball than we did at the beginning of the year and last year certainly,” Paul said. “We’re way better there than we were. We’re still not a very good off-ball team, we’re still not a very good inside team. We give up some stuff inside where we’re still playing just a little bit soft. That’s experience; that’s the guys being on their toes and being aware off-ball a little bit more. Aware off-ball will come with more comfort and playing more and more at this level. That’s it. Off-ball and inside.”

One defensive player who is really rounding into form was freshman goalie Robbie Zonino. He was a bit of a whipping boy at times early in the season, but he did make 10 saves while allowing 12 goals (senior walkon Bobby Riso allowed the other Yale score), including a couple nice ones. He’s still not on Gerald Logan’s level, but has shown he has what it takes to succeed at this level.

“You look at Robbie this point in the year compared to the beginning of the year, he really is a different goalie,” Paul said. “Is he giving us some of the saves that Gerald gave us last year? Not right now, but he’s playing really solid.”

Some of Michigan’s weak points defensively will be helped with returning players next year. LSM/D Chase Brown and Logan are out for the season with injury, and coming off redshirts next year, they should be a shot in the arm. That doesn’t help right now, btu does show that there is a bright future in the years to come.

Up Next

Michigan enters Saturday’s game against Robert Morris knowing that they’re already in the postseason (the No. 4 seed in the ECAC Tournament May 1-3), and that this could be one of their last strong chances to win a game this season, barring a major upset in the league tourney. That should mean they play loose – which can be both a good and bad thing.

The Colonials are a middle-tier outfit, a couple notched below U-M in the Tempo-Free Lax rankings. With such factors as the season finale, homefield advantage, and simple hunger for wins this season (and few opportunities to get them against a slate much tougher than you’d expect from such a young team), Michigan should have an edge.

We’ve seen that not amount to much in the past, but this is a truly winnable game for Michigan, and they’re not in any position to look past such opportunities.

Detroit 5, Manhattan 6

This one hurts. Detroit has three one-goal losses in MAAC play, but the first two were to really good squads. This one was not, and it could cost the Titans a postseason berth.

Tempo Free

From the official box score, a look at the tempo-free stats:

Manhattan 2014
Detroit Manhattan
Faceoff Wins 9 Faceoff Wins 6
Clearing 13-18 Clearing 17-21
Possessions 31 Possessions 32
Goals 5 Goals 6
Offensive Efficiency .161 Offensive Efficiency .188

The possession margin was only slightly tipped in Manhattan’s favor. Detroit made strides on faceoffs, but was simply brutal in the clearing game.

Both teams turned in pretty bad offensive efficiency marks, and though the Titans’ number looks quite a bit worse, the low-scoring nature of the game means that one possession (and one goal) could have made that look radically different. “Not quite as bad as it seems” is, like, the worst consolation prize ever, though.

Notes

How did the offense get that way? The same way it has been all year. The Titans are extremely sloppy with the ball. They had 18 turnovers in a very slow (by their standards) game – 58% of the time. That’s terrible. With five of those turnovers coming in clearing postures, the offense didn’t even have a chance.

Of course, when the offense did get the ball, they were far from blameless. Alex Maini had SIX turnovers (that’s nearly 20% of Detroit’s total possessions), and Mike Birney launched eight shots, only three of them on goal, none of them beating the keeper. Detroit simply has to value the ball more on offense. Sure, missed shots can be backed up, but from seeing the Titans play several times this year, not enough of them are getting backed up with shooters spraying the ball all over the field.

Maini was one of the few offensive players with a multi-point day, contributing two assists. When that is accompanied by six turnovers, you haven’t undone enough of the damage. Scott Drummond, Brandon Beauregard, and Tom Masterson each had a goal and an assist. All five UDM goals were assisted.

The defense was the bright spot in this loss. The efficiency number speaks for itself, and it should come as no surprise that freshman Jason Weber was a big part of that. He saved 12 shots while allowing six goals. He was responsible for a turnover in the clearing game, but that happens from time to time.

Defensively, attackman Tom Masterson was your leader in caused turnovers with three (a very impressive mark for an offensive player). Defenseman Chris Shevins notched two while picking up three ground balls.

The faceoff game was actually something of a strength for Detroit. Having a healthy Tyler Corcoran certainly helped, if only to give more options if one wasn’t working out on draws. Damien Hicks did get a couple draws and lost them both, but overall a 60% win rate is not bad in the least.

Manhattan was led offensively by Patrick Hodapp (2G, 1A) and Andrew Hurst (2G), and defensively by goalie Rich Akapnitis, who allowed five goals and saved 10 shots.

Up Next

I guess calling Manhattan almost a sure thing in the preview last weekend came back to bite me, but man, Monmouth definitely has to be a sure thing. The Hawks are 0-12 and have only come close to a win a couple times this season (although their pythagorean win expectation isn’t so far behind Manhattan’s, even after the Jaspers’ upset Saturday).

Detroit, on the other hand, absolutely must have this victory for a shot at making the MAAC Tournament (after they were very close to a chance at earning the one seed just a week ago). The scenarios are very complicated – look for a post on it later this week – and UDM does not control its own destiny at this point.

Getting a big win against an overmatched first-year program and building momentum toward a possible conference tournament run are musts. If the game is even close, Detroit will show it doesn’t deserve the MAAC bid anyway.

Mini-previews: Michigan and Detroit v. Yale and Manhattan

Been out of commission all week, so no full previews (and recaps from last weekend’s games forthcoming… at some point). However, a little talk about today’s opponents for the Division-1 men.

Yale

The Elis are a borderline top-10 team, something that Michigan has either had shocking success dealing with (fellow Ivy squad Cornell, non-blowouts against Hopkins and Maryland), or struggled with more in line with what you’d expect. There has also been a tendency of this Michigan team to ride a wave, up one game, down the next. Last weekend’s game – or second half, at least – was a clunker, so you’d think they come out relatively hot today.

Yale is a very good faceoff and possession (plus-level clear, average ride) team. Michigan can either dominate faceoffs even against some of the best in the country, or come out dead flat and struggle against mediocre specialists. I expect a bounceback after two down weeks from Brad Lott. The mental side of the game is something he’ll continue to grasp with experience, and will allow him to be more consistent. For now, you hope for the “hot” side of the hot-and-cold pendulum.

Yale’s offense is actually below-average, but the Bulldogs have some weapons. Junior attack Conrad Oberbeck is a finisher with some ability to dish (23G-8A-31 points), senior linemate Brandon Mangan is balanced, and junior midfielder Shane Thornton is your primary feeder (7G-11A-18 points). The players behind them are all more skewed toward scoring than creating, with junior midfielder Colin Flaherty’s 10 goals and two assists making him the other scary finisher.

Junior Eric Natale has played almost every minute between the pipes, and while he’s saving about .540, much of the credit goes to his defense, which is really good overall and prevents teams from getting off many shots at all, much less good ones (the total volume of shots has been a limiting factor of the Yale offense, to even things up on the other end). Sophomore Michael Quinn and senior Jimmy Craft are the dangerous takeaway guys with 15 and 13 on the year, respectively.

Yale is too strong for Michigan, and even though the Wolverines should play above their heads (as they typically do against tough competition), the Bulldogs win 13-9.

Manhattan

The Jaspers are one of the worst teams in the country, and a Detroit team that is rounding into form (two overtime losses at home to the MAAC leaders stand between them and what would otherwise be a great push to end the spring) should be able to dispatch them pretty easily.

The problems for Manhattan start on faceoffs, where they’re in the bottom-5 nationally… just a couple spots behind Detroit (though the numbers aren’t adjusted for schedule strength there, so a grain of salt is necessary). That says to me that the Jaspers are bad not just with their specialist, but also on wing play. I like Detroit’s Damien Hicks when it comes to securing the clamp, but he and his wings have struggled to corral loose balls. Against a poor team like Manhattan, they should be able to take care of it just fine. Manhattan’s clear is dead last in the country, so Detroit should be able to take advantage there. Even though UDM’s clear is also bad, Manhattan’s ride is bottom-10 nationally, and that issue might not plague the Titans as much as usual.

The Manhattan defense is slightly less bad than the offense, and senior goalie Rich Akapnitis probably deserves most of the credit for that. He is saving shots at a .528 clip, despite playing behind… whatever that is. The Jaspers allow 0.76 shots per possession, one of the country’s worst marks. Senior Dan McGreevy and sophomore Alex Gitlitz, with their double-digit CTs, try to help Akapnitis out, but opponents are still able to put .600 of their shots on the cage.

The problem with the offense is related, in a way. The Jaspers actually put a greater percentage of their total shots on the cage, .604, but they can’t beat opposing keepers. That speaks to a lack of finding good looks as well as a simple inability to shoot hard enough or accurately enough to get it by the goalie. Against a strong – possible freshman All-American – talent like Jason Weber, look for a lot of shots on goal and not a whole lot of them to get by.

POW. Enjoy some lacrosse today, y’all.

Scores and Schedule: April 19, 2014

Very different expected results for the Division-1 men today, and plenty of action across other divisions. Either there are a lot of boys’ teams playing double- and triple-headers, or LaxPower has gone ham. A little of both?
