Trying to get a bit of a new feature going here on GLS. It’ll be a bit more robust once the high school season rolls around (and since I just got the idea… this morning, it’ll include MCLA games going forward, too, several of which I missed last night).
NCAA Division-1
Detroit @ Delaware 1 p.m. (Streaming online) Preview.
Michigan v. Denison 1 p.m. (scrimmage) Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. No new preview, but since the season hasn’t started yet, the preview from the Detroit scrimmage still applies.
MCLA
Grand Valley State v. Carthage 4 p.m. (scrimmage)
According to the stats, Kelly starting in goal over Levell for the Titans. Reg hinted at this yesterday, but I can’t help but admit I’m still surprised.
Kelly got the start and looked great in the first. 6 saves on 10 SOG. All 4 goals were scored about 5 inches off the crease. 1 on man up 3 on fast breaks. I was most surprised he didn’t start the 2nd half.
I think the team was too.
Titans draw first blood 7:32 into the game. Both teams playing aggressive D but not causing many turnovers. So much for the fast-paced, high-scoring game I predicted.
Looks like live stats for the Michigan game aren’t going to happen. First quarter almost over and the stat feed hasn’t started. Denison leads 1-0.
In the other game (live video what up), Titans have had two solid man-down stops. Looking very good in the early going against Delaware with a 1-0 lead.
Stupid offside by the Titans leads to a Delaware man-up and a goal. Ugh.
Already 3 EMO opportunities for Delaware; they were bound to cash in sooner or later.
Quick faceoff win and quick goal for Delaware. There goes momentum.
2-1 Delaware at the end of 1. Titans need to come out strong in the second, because Delaware is really putting pressure on them now.
3-on-1 transition goal for Delaware. Blue Hens up 3-1.
Man-up goal salvages a bit of momentum for the Titans. Down 3-2 now.
Joel Matthews down. A Blue Hen retaliated for some tough (legal) play with a shot to the balls. Titans going on the man-up for unsportsmanlike conduct, I think.
Scramble play leads to a GOAL. Back even at 3-3. Skippd across the crease from Harris to Adams and Shayne went low-to-high for the man-up goal.
Ref misses a pretty blatant push from behind on Delaware that leads to a Blue Hen transition opportunity and go-ahead goal. 4-3 Blue Hens.
Transition defense is going to have to improve if UDM’s looking to win this game.
GB pops in the air, and two Titans are alone against the keeper. 4-4.
Rough third quarter for UDM. I get out of a halftime shower to find them down 10-5.
Non-shockingly, Titans getting abused on faceoffs. A few Delaware goals have resulted from the transition opportunities a faceoff win provided.
12-1 run in the third for Delaware. Gulp. Fourth quarter is now about saving face for the Titans.
19-6. Wow. I didn’t get to watch. This is a game I had them losing on the way to a good season, but I didn’t see this kind of throttling coming. What happened?
Tied 4-4 at halftime.
They pulled Kelly for AJ to start the 2nd half and he gave up 4 goals on 4 shots in about 4 minutes. Took all the momentum from them and then Delaware’s FOGO Dan Cooney is one of the best in the country. Make it take it time and time again. He won 12 of 14 faceoffs and they got a ton of transition goals. UDM just couldn’t get possession. By the time they put Kelly back in it was too late.
6 on 6 they were great for the first half and most of the 3rd. I don’t think they gave up a non fast break or man up goal until the 10th goal, but by then the game was decided. The D was exhausted and they started giving up some bad goals.
So close … yet so far away. This team can be pretty good though when they are clicking. A win over a ranked team will happen sooner or later. Beat Ohio!
Ohio is the Bobcats. UDM is playing the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Not to Coach Hoke and Michigan fans Reg. Just like Michigan was always “that state up north” to Woody. Rivalries are awesome.
You make this sound like it was a pretty big coaching mistake. I’m assuming they went in to the game planning to split the goalies. Why else would they pull the starter after a great first half on the road against a good team?
I have not talked to the coaches yet.
AJ sat out the scrimmage and most of practice last week for a violation of team rules. I’m not sure if him sitting out the 1st half was a carry over of punishment or they didn’t want to start a guy after sitting out a week of practice.
I have not talked to the coaches yet on why they made the switch at half, but with the way Kelly played in the 1st half I was surprised they made the switch.
Sorry, I am a Michigan fan and Ohio is in Athens. Great school gorgeous campus. Do not denigrate Ohio by confusing it with the other school in Columbus.
I’ll let you tell Coach Hoke that he should handle it that way Clark Bell. Let us know how that goes.
Hopefully our lax traditions won’t be overrun by football traditions. I certainly don’t tell Hoke what to do and I don’t do everything he does.
We in the lacrosse community owe a debt of gratitude to Ohio U. Don Lutz played for the club team there and when he moved to Michigan he started the first High School team in Michigan in 1969. OSU had a varsity team then but it was an Ohio U grad that started HS lacrosse in Michigan.
Thanks CB. I always wondered where Lutz played. (I wrongly assumed that it was back east). By the way, slight correction. Lutz started the first varsity team in Michigan, and the year was 1967. Cranbrook had a club team in 1968, going varsity in 1972. Other than playing the Detroit Lacrosse Club, it was intramural. DCD started their varsity team in 1971, with the first high school game in Michigan taking place that year (LC vs DCD).
Also note that girls lacrosse had actually already been here since 1959 with Kingswood (Cranbrook) and University (Liggett) School. ASH later formed a team, prior to 1967.
UofM’s 12-8 win over Denison compared to UDM’s 10-7 loss to that same team sets the stage for a potentially close game that could go either way. UDM’s 2 games (on the road) before the UofM game might end up proving to be the only difference maker.
I think JP kept his starters in for this scrimmage, and that wasnt necessarily the case with u of d. Regardless, you never know which team shows up to play, so hopefully we at least get a competitive game.
You are right though that these two games against good competition should have u of d ready to go next week and could be a nice advantage for them.
If we’re playing the “but they didn’t have all their guys!!” card, JD Johnson, Thomas Paras, and Austin Swaney are all Michigan starters who didn’t play or only saw limited time.
I’d rather assume that it’s not a huge factor in either team’s favor.
A denison scrimmage without Matthews, Adams, and lehto must we not forget.
Add in the 3 missing UDM players to the Denison scrimmage, and that probably makes it a 13-10 win, which is comparable to the UofM 12-8 win over Denison. Again, this sets the stage for a potentially close game that could go either way. Again, UDM’s 2 games (on the road) before the UofM game might end up proving to be the only difference maker.
Good catch on the L’anse Creuse date.
I think the second game may not be a big benefit. UDM plays a night game away at Ohio State on Thursday night. They will have less than 72 hours to come back. Could be a mixed blessing.
Good point. A bus ride home late on thursday plus a few guys enjoying friday/saturday night could make them sluggish. But I have a feeling they are looking forward to playing well on Sunday and will have their priorities in order.
Dennison put in 45 players vs Michigan, 22 versus Detroit…. Another great point CK
Looking at the box score right now. Denison played 29. Michigan played 23. (Including goalies.) Michigan had a TON of guys on the sidelines not in uniform. Looked like almost half the team. Not sure the story there. Injuries? Suspensions?
I only watched the first quarter of the MSU scrimmage. Denison had some of their guys in who played against UM and some who didn’t. State looked good.
“I’m also not sure who the usual 4 are (UNC, Delaware, and Gtown) but who’s the fourth? OSU beat them by 1.”
Anon, I’ll assume that you know who the usual 4 are now.
No, not a clue.
I would love to know why Kelly got pulled, IL was gushing over him. Great coaching call.
State scrimmaged Denison after Michigan and did better than hold their own. Obviously DU was clearing the bench but State looked good.
State won 9-5. Have not seen film or a box score, but if Denison played 45 guys against Michigan I bet they did similar vs MSU.
Sorry, just saw it was really 29.
So anyone know how the people who won the position battles did? Boregaurd/Maini? Dwyer/Shevins/Nolan/Gifford? Davenport/Garippa/Corcoran? Anyone who saw the game have any comments on how the winners did?
Bo got the start. Maini did play a lot though. Not sure if there is a clear front runner, but I think we’ll know better after OSU.
Dwyer got the start and played most of the game, but the other 3 all say time at different points in the game.
FOGO is a mess. Garippa was out there to try and slow the bleeding and keep Cooney from getting fast breaks. Corcoran jumped too many times against The Hill and may have lost some of his momentum in the coaches minds. His style was not a good match up vs Cooney but he should get a lot more draws against PSU.
How many times did he jump? We’ve seen that before. Who was backing up Houtby? Who played the wings? Missed the game.
CB, good point about the OSU game. UDM’s advantages of two games (against good opponents) under their belt is somewhat balanced out by the potential disadvantages of physical (72 hours turnaround/2 long round-trip bus rides in less than 10 days) and emotional (2 blowout losses?) fatigue.
CKL, OSU underestimated the Titans last year and probably won’t do it again this year. I am not sure the second blowout will occur though. But fatigue may play a factor. UDM knows that building environment well and their hearts will certainly be in it. I am sure they want to smack down the upstart. I wouldn’t bet against UDM right now and am just hoping for a great game in a packed house that will have people wanting more. People at the MLL see that and they will be talking to someone about a team in the Motor City.
Didn’t OSU have a significant number of their top guys benched for the UDM game last year? If so, excuse or not, it could obviously play a factor. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I remember seeing something about that.
I think this is a winnable game for Detroit nonetheless. How they follow up the Delaware loss will say a lot about them.
Did UDM bus to Delaware?
UDM buses to every game this year, and it sure is a long ride to Delaware.
Two blow out losses? Detroit is fired up for Ohio state, they’re ready.
CB, points taken. However, keep in mind that OSU and Delaware are similarly ranked (21-30) teams, so one might be able to expect a similar score against UDM. (Quint K. even has OSU at #19). Both teams will be fired up, so I think the emotional aspect might cancel out. Also, a much shorter trip to Columbus versus Newark will cut down on UDM fatigue. Prediction: OSU 15 UDM 8
CKL,
I hope UDM fare better than that but you are right about the rankings. Both Delaware and OSU show up in someone’s top 20.
There won’t even be 15 goals scored in the game with OSU.
CK, why are you so negative towards Detroit?
Must have a kid on Michigan, or Holtz must have cut your kid.
Detroit matches up really well against OSU.
Badadada, I’m a fan of both the UDM and Michigan lax programs, however:
1. I’m a realist.
2. I’m not going to throw out logic, reasoning, common sense, and many years of life/sports/lacrosse experience.
3. I’m not a UofM basher. In particular, I’m not going to use UDM to bash UofM.
Now, could you explain your ‘reasoning’ in regards to UDM vs OSU? UDM vs UofM?
