More High School Roundups

A couple days after I posted several links to recaps of high school games, a bunch more came across the desk. If you know of any more I’m missing, never hesitate to comment here or drop me a line about it.

Joe Bowen Profile

The Grand Rapids Press profiles Joe Bowen, a senior attack at Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Bowen said he hopes to surprise people during the lacrosse season the way the football team did. “If you look at our football, especially, no one expected us to do that,” said Bowen, a strong safety whose Cougars won a Division 4 state crown. “We knew we had a good group of athletes, but I think we shocked a lot of people. I was just fortunate enough to be on this great football team. We have really good athletes in lacrosse, and there’s no telling what we can accomplish.”

It would indeed be a huge surprise if GRCC won the state title in lacrosse this season. However, they’re #2 in Division 2 to LaxPower, so there’s plenty of time ahead of them to achieve their goal. Except for Holland Christian next Wednesday, they won’t face much tough competition until the playoffs.

Bowen has narrowed his college choices to Michigan, Boston College and Miami (Ohio), and hopes to play club lacrosse in college.

That’s notable, though I think if he wants to play club ball in college, Michigan might not be an option for too much longer.

Notre Dame Prep 7, Cranbrook 5

The game article claims to include video, but there’s none in there. Also the author purports to be a real-life writer and thinks “alumni” is a singular noun and “rhythem” is a word at all.

Flint Powers 20, Swartz Creek 1

Unsurprising result, really. Nick Racine scored 6 goals, and his teammate Dominic Hamper scored 4 goals and added 8 assists.

Saginaw Heritage 6, Bay City Western 3

Game article.

Mattawan 16, Portage Northern 3

Article from the Kalamazoo Gazette. Mattawan is now 3-0 on the season, while Portage Northern is struggling at 1-4 on the year.

Mattawan’s Jake Auyer (pictured at right) scored 5 goals for the Wildcats, and talked about an aggressive riding strategy that helped his team have plenty of offensive success.

Ann Arbor Huron 19, Temperance Bedford 3

The River Rats kicked off conference play with a big win. Kyle Aaronson and Henry Upton each scored 5 goals for Huron. The Rats didn’t have many assists, with only 6 on their 19 goals.

Dexter 16, Howell 1

Dexter’s Andrew Erber, who will play at VMI next year, had 4 goals and 6 assists for Dexter.

Ann Arbor Huron 18, Chelsea 3

The River Rats continued their early-season dominance of conference teams. They’ll face their stiffest test of the young season tomorrow against Dexter, at 5:30 PM in Dexter.

Bay City Western 8, Bay City Central 4

First victory in program history for Bay City Western (in their second year of existence).
