This had to be my favorite quote from several month ago during the euphoria of the new UM program –

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion on the coaching situation, but to say the AD “didn’t have their ducks in a row” is flat-out wrong. They knew exactly who they wanted to coach the team, and the only reason he wasn’t announced on the day of the press conference was due to laws about public institutions (they have to post open positions for at least a week before making an official hire).

You can think what you want about JP, but the facts are that he’s a hell of a recruiter. He’s gotten kids who could have played at bigtime schools to come pay 3k a year to play on his club team. Maybe they weren’t going to start at Syracuse, Duke, etc., but these are kids who could have at least received some playing time anywhere. Is he the best X-and-O coach in the world? Maybe not (I have no idea, but it;s safe to assume no), but there’s much more to the game than that.

From Day 1, Michigan will have excellent opportunity to offer to recruits, the “big-time college” experience that they can only get at a few other Division-1 programs (and only a handful that are nationally competitive), a damn good education (especially among those schools offering the full college experience), and competitive facilities, with even better ones on the way. That brings up another important point, which is plenty of monetary support.

They aren’t going to be beating Duke or Syracuse in their first few years, but to think they’re going out and getting pasted like Mercer or Presbyterian did time and again this year is silly. Even without changing a damn thing, Michigan’s club squad from any of the past few years could have easily handled Mercer this season.

SO HERE WE GO, A CHANCE TO SEE REALTY –
OH GOODY – now some real barn burners for fall ball. Now we will get to see how the 25 club guys (who could have seen some playing time anywhere because JP was a hell of a recruiter via Tim) play against probably the weakest DI programs. My guess they will be awful. Providence 18 – UM 3 (Providence 3-12 in 2011) ; Concordia where is that and they have a lacrosse team? Oh!! They are a new start up DIII. Have to build some confidence for the club kids. St. Joe’s 12 -UM3 (St. Joe’s 0-15 in 2011!!!) and Towson 22- UM 1(Towson 3-10 in 2011). Even though those three DI programs had terrible records last year their talent is far superior to any of the guys at UM. Based on UM not getting one transfer and thinking the club guys will be competitive, which is what JP clearly thinks, will lead UM down the path for a Mercer/Presbyterian season this year and next year. Maybe they can pull out a couple of wins in year three or as JP said when asked by an UM alum can they beat Ohio State”Of course” – Sure he can – that’s a stretch. Maybe JP is not arrogant as I first thought, he just doesn’t realize how different the game will be at this level. Can’t wait for the spring schedule !!!

      Hapless,

St Joe’s: Hofstra, UMass, Maryland, Delaware

Towson: Hopkins, UMass, Stonybrook, Maryland, Delaware, Hofstra, Loyola (and legendary coach Tony Seaman)

Providence: Syracuse, Villanova, Notre Dame, Georgetown, UMass, Yale

Bottom line, if those schools are “good enough” to play these schools in the regular season…then they’re “good enough” for Michigan to play in Fall Ball.

The worth of who they are playing can be debated. I really think you just want to get out and have some competition.

But where they are playing is cool. This was part of the announcement of the new captains: http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-lacros/spec-rel/092311aab.html

“The Maize and Blue will conduct their first public event on Oct. 2 at Michigan Stadium when U-M hosts Providence and Concordia (Wis.) in a series of scrimmages. The Wolverines will oppose Providence at 1:30 p.m. and Concordia at 5:30 p.m.”

In the Big House. I like it.

  3. AndyD says:

Seems like very appropriate fall competition to me. Providence will be a good first D1 scrimmage. It doesn’t really make sense to start with Virginia. Concordia will allow both teams to give their young guys a good run.

I’m assuming the event in Philly is the Headstrong tournament. I doubt the teams that play in that get to pick who they play. Those two are good early matchups for UM. To me, this looks like really good fall scheduling.

It’s not like they can go out and recruit transfers. Who knows how much interest there was or even if they had the opportunity to admit anyone since they announced in the summer.

Playing in the Big House is surprising. That’s hallowed ground, especially this time of year. Are they really putting down lacrosse lines during the football season?

  4. Tim says:

The Philly tournament is the Nick Colleluori Classic. It takes place at Ridley High Scool (actually in Folsom PA, I believe).

  5. Tim says:

Hap, what part of that comment I made is overly euphoric or unrealistic? I didn’t say Michigan was going to beat any big-name teams (in fact, I said they wouldn’t) and simply said that they got the coach they wanted – which is true.

If you’re just going to come on here and troll all the time, at least do a good job at it.

  6. Hap says:

Clip Clop, Clip Clop, Clip Clop, who’t that crossing my bridge?

Anyways – Tim to clarify your position who do you think UM could beat in 2012 with the current roster? Do you think UM can win a game in the ECAC in 2012, 2013 or 2014? Do you think UM can avoid a Mercer like season in 2012 or 2013?

    • Tim says:

As for people they’re expected to play in 2012, I’d say they have a decent-or-better shot against Detroit, Mercer, and maybe a mid-level team. Ohio State will probably be a better team overall than Michigan next year, but who knows if the intangibles of playing in the Big House have a big effect on the game.

Mercer got blown out by every single team they played last year, except a meh D-3 team. There’s a 0% chance that Michigan 2012 is as bad as Mercer 2011.
