Michigan
It seems to be a big time of the year for websites to discuss their most-read stories (hmm… there’s an idea), and Inside Lacrosse‘s No. 2 post of the year was the announcement of Michigan’s promotion to varsity.
Brady Hoke’s “Team #132” mantra has rubbed off on his fellow Wolverine headman, and lacrosse coach John Paul is excited to get back to business with “Team one.” Football has a sliiiiightly longer history at Michigan than does lacrosse, I’d say.
Recruiting
Inside Lacrosse ran their Michigan commitment story for Georgetown Prep ’14 defenseman Hugh Mosko:
Hugh Mosko, D, Georgetown Prep (Md.) has committed to the University of Michigan. The 6-0, 175-pound defenseman has also played for the Club Blue Hoyas and for the FCA National Team over the past two years. This summer Mosko played at Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip Camp for Rising Sophomores, The Brine Shootout, and he was named as an all-star at the Bison Brawl. Hugh will join his brother Andrew, who is a freshman Midfielder at Michigan. He also strongly considered Johns Hopkins and Ohio State.
A point of pride for GLS: the news broke here a couple days before it hit IL. Maybe one day in the distant future, I’ll finish up all of the commitment profiles that need to be done.
The Michigan women are out on the recruiting trail, picking up a commitment from St. Paul’s (Md.) attacker Amanda Sutor.
Atomic Lacrosse will be hosting a recruiting seminar on Jan. 26, featuring none other than Michigan’s own John Paul.
D-1 Expansion
This is off-topic on a micro scale, but in the grand scheme of things (lacrosse Manifest Destiny-related), it’s relevant, especially given yesterday’s post. Colorado State’s Athletic Director, Jack Graham, says the school is interested in adding lacrosse as a varsity sport in the future:
Graham: I would love to add lacrosse to our list of athletic programs. In fact, I intend to make certain that the design we adopt for our on-campus stadium will enable us to use the new stadium for Lacrosse.
However, we do have to be careful that we don’t put too many things on our plate too soon. We must prioritize all of the needs and opportunities that are facing us. Lacrosse, women’s and men’s soccer and men’s and women’s hockey would all be great additions.
I’ll continue pounding the drum for a league comprised of “Western” schools until it happens, I think. Similarly promising news (though to a much lesser degree) out of Austin, as well.

Rankin’s
Inside Lacrosse’s MAAC preseason outlook is up. The Titans are picked to finish second in the conference (behind Siena), and a handful of individuals get recognition:
- LSM Jordan Houtby, Detroit Mercy
- D Jamie Hebden, Detroit Mercy
- G AJ Levell, Detroit Mercy
Siena and Marist each had three players recognized on the all-conference projections as well. Although the league returns plenty of talented offensive players, I would not be surprised if a UDM attackman earned recognition following the year.
In similar news, Lacrosse Magazine has released its preseason top-20 lists, and while no NCAA teams from Michigan make the list (all in good time on that one), a number of club teams make the grade:

The Michigan women have hired Jen Valore as an assistant coach. Detroit should be at full strength this spring, and they’ll face a tough slate. The more I talk about a new GWLL, the more likely it is to happen, right?
