Shocking though it may be for someone who blogs about the game, but it’s the truth: I have never played lacrosse. That will change tonight, as I’ll take part in my first-ever game in the Men’s Rec League at All-American Lacrosse in Pontiac.
I’m predicting my stick skills and everything lacrosse-specific will be not so pretty, but as a reasonably athletic 20-something guy, hopefully I’ll be able to hold my own a little bit. Visiting my parents’ house for Father’s Day this weekend, I took a trip up to my high school alma mater and shot around on the turf field there a little bit, and I’ll admit that didn’t exactly instill much confidence (maybe I should have called up some of my high school classmates who played, for a couple pointers).
Since summer is going to be a slow season around here, I’ll keep you updated on my summer-long journey into the breach.
Sure it’ll go great 🙂 Protect that stick
Protect the stick, try not to wear yourself out, dodge and let the person over pursue, just try to get a feel for it. It’s really hard to give advice because I don’t know if you have worked on your shooting or not? Just have fun, and don’t over analyze anything while you play because you will turnover the ball, and don’t ball watch while on offense in amazement. Not sure how serious this league is. Many videos exist that show how to change direction and cradle. Cradling is essential. Not much more. Let me know how it goes! Have to just help you after this first go-around!
