The Titans have filled their assistant coaching vacancy, hiring offensive coordinator Bill Tully away from Whittier College. From the press release:
DETROIT — The Detroit men’s lacrosse team will have a new assistant coach on the sidelines as head coach Matt Holtz announced that Bill Tully will join the program for the upcoming season as the squad’s offensive coordinator.
“Bill has a wealth of experience coaching offenses,” said Holtz. “He is the perfect man to keep the program growing.”
Tully arrives at Detroit after serving as an assistant coach for Whittier College for the past two seasons. With the Poets, he was a vital part in all practice and game preparation, recruiting and fundraising. His specific duties were with the offense as he guided the Poets’ attack that averaged 9.1 goals per game in his two years, including 11.6 in 2010.
Before arriving at Whittier, Tully spent a year as a volunteer coach at Drexel, where he helped the CAA program in practice and game planning. Specifically, he coached the scout team offense and scout team extra-man offense to implement the weekly defensive game plan. That Dragons’ team went on to a CAA tournament semifinals appearance in 2009.
Prior to his college coaching duties, Tully spent three years (2005, 2007-08) as an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator with the Lyons Township High School (La Grange, IL) varsity lacrosse team, helping the program to a state finals appearance in 2005. He also served as head coach in 2007 of the Western Springs Lacrosse Summer All-Star Program (Western Springs, IL) and of St. Rita’s High School (Chicago, IL) team in 2006.
He has also been a coach at a number of lacrosse camps throughout his coaching career, and was the Director of the Midwest Lacrosse Camp (DeKalb, IL) in 2006.
Tully played lacrosse at Villanova before transferring to Gettysburg College. He graduated from Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2004.
The Titan offense has started rounding into form over the past couple years, with Joel Matthews running the show in 2010 and Shayne Adams and Saline native Scott Harris picking up the slack when Matthews missed the 2011 season due to academics.
With Matthews expected to be back on the field this spring, Tully has plenty of returning offensive talent to work with. More analysis in the days to come.
