Press release:
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — University of Michigan men’s lacrosse head coach John Paul announced today (Wednesday, June 22) the addition of Ken Broschart as an assistant coach and Joe Hennessy as the director of operations for the newly elevated varsity program.
“It’s no coincidence that our incredible run over the past four years coincided with the arrival of Ken Broschart,” Paul said. “I’m very pleased that he is staying with us as we make the transition to Division I. Ken brings such a high level of passion and intensity, and our athletes love him for that. He demands excellence from all of us. He’s made me a better coach.”
“Joe Hennessy has been with our team for the past four years,” said Paul. “Over that time he has become integral to nearly every aspect of our operations. He knows our program inside and out, and more importantly, he knows Michigan. Keeping him on board in an administrative role allows us to move forward as seamlessly as possible.”
“I am honored and humbled to be a part of this University of Michigan,” said Broschart. “It has always been a goal of mine to be a Division I coach, and I will be forever thankful to Coach Paul and Michigan for providing me with such an opportunity. Over the past four years, we worked very hard to reach success. Year to year, our efforts became greater to not only stay at such a high level but to surpass what we did the year before.”
“It is an honor and a privilege to continue working with this team and this great university,” said Hennessy. “These are exciting times for Michigan men’s lacrosse and I eagerly await the challenges ahead.”
Broschart has spent the previous four seasons with the Michigan club program, working with the defense in the most-recent season. He spent his first three years working with the offense prior to switching. With Broschart working with the offense, the Wolverines scored 15.46 goals per game in 2008, 16.43 in 2009 and 16.13 in 2010.
The Wolverines were 76-2 during Broschart’s time on the sidelines, winning three national championships (2008, ’09, ’10). He also ran the strength and conditioning program for the team while assisting in all areas of recruiting.
Prior to coming to Ann Arbor, Broschart served as head coach of the club program at the University of Arizona for four years. During his tenure, he recorded a 57-24 (.704) record, guiding the Wildcats to three WCLL finals and four MCLA National Championship tournament appearances. Broschart was also named the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League Coach of the Year in 2004.
Broschart brings a wealth of national coaching experience to the table as well, with two stints as a member of the USA West Team coaching staff. As the head coach in 2007, Broschart’s team won the Berlin Open, and as an assistant in 2005, where he coached alongside Paul, the squad took home the Asian Pacific Games championship.
Hennessy, a 2003 graduate of Michigan, volunteered in the U-M athletic media relations office from 1999-2003, working with the hockey program. Following his graduation, he moved to U-M Rec Sports serving as the media relations director for all club programs. In 2007, Hennessy became the director operations for the men’s lacrosse program.
I already talked a bit about Ken last week, but it’s great to also see Joe added to the staff. Both of them played a huge role in helping Michigan get to this point, and it’s good to see their work pay off.
